Join Julia Bryan-Wilson, professor of LGBTQ art history at Columbia University, for an engaging talk examining women artists of color who use embellishment to blur the lines between function and décor. Exploring the work of artists such as Pacita Abad and Rosie Lee Tompkins, Bryan-Wilson discusses how their practice of intricately adorning domestic objects can expand our understanding of women’s work.

“Julia Bryan-Wilson: Embellished Legacies” is the third of three 2022 Clarice Smith Lectures presented by the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

About Julia Bryan-Wilson

Bryan-Wilson's 2017 book Fray: Art and Textile Politics won prestigious awards such as the ASAP Book Prize, the Frank Jewett Mather Award, and the Robert Motherwell Book Award. Her show “Louise Nevelson: Persistence” was an official collateral event of the 2022 Venice Biennale, and her monograph on Nevelson is forthcoming in 2023.

The auditorium doors will close ten minutes after the published start time for the program, following introductory remarks. Latecomers arriving after this grace period will be admitted at the discretion of staff.
