| Isolation ends for fully vaccinated EU and US travellers |
| |
| | | Fully vaccinated travellers from the EU and US no longer have to self-isolate when arriving to the UK from amber list countries. "The minute I heard the announcement I just burst into to tears, we have been waiting for this," says one woman who lives in Los Angeles. She’s flying back to the UK in a few weeks with her wife and young baby, so he can meet his grandparents for the first time. Like everyone else flying from those destinations, excluding France, they will be exempt from isolating for 10 days, bringing them into line with rules for UK travellers. This rule change is also welcomed by the travel industry, but airline bosses want the rules to be relaxed further. They're calling for more countries to the added to the UK’s green travel list to further boost the sector. Meanwhile, the government's traffic light system is also raising concerns among Tory MPs who fear the prospect of an additional so-called amber watch list of countries could move destinations to the red list at short notice. This would mean people coming to the UK will have to isolate for 10 days in a government-approved hotel regardless of their vaccine status. The potential new travel category would "be viewed as a massive red flag" that would "likely" cause bookings to those countries to "collapse", says Huw Merriman, chairman of the Transport Select Committee. | |

| Pay-rise plea for privately employed NHS staff |
| |
| |
| It’s been widely reported that NHS staff have been offered a 3% pay rise by the government. Cleaners, porters, catering assistants, security guards and other staff who work alongside them but are employed privately are at risk of missing out. That’s what the union Unison says, adding its members "have worked hard and under incredibly challenging circumstances across the NHS throughout the pandemic" and this should be reflected in their pay. The union is calling for those workers to receive the same pay rise as NHS staff. "No-one delivering NHS services should be paid less than their directly-employed colleagues," says general secretary Christina McAnea, as the union urges companies running health contracts to offer their staff the same increase. | |

| | | | | Protests in Iran against a range of grievances - including a severe lack of water and power blackouts - have drawn attention to the country's wider water problems. Experts have raised concerns about the situation for many years, so what's to blame for Iran's water crisis? In April, the Iranian Meteorological Organisation warned of an "unprecedented drought" and rainfall levels that were substantially below long-term averages. In the oil-producing province of Khuzestan, residents took to the streets over water shortages, and there were protests against hydroelectric power cuts in other cities. The government has responded with emergency assistance for the hardest-hit areas. But Iran faces a range of environmental challenges. | |
