| Europe gets first medical marijuana ETF
It seems to have all been about marijuana in the last two ETF Express newsletters. It’s a subject that’s hard to get away from at the moment and this week saw a ground breaking launch with the first UCITS ETF in Europe based on medical marijuana that covers multi-jurisdictions – Germany, Italy, Dublin and the UK - and makes it easy to invest in this popular but difficult to access area. We have an interview with Hector McNeil, co-founder and CEO of HANetf who white labelled the product with Canadian ETF providers Purpose Investments. The cannabis investment sector has had a difficult time over the last year, experiencing what McNeil dismisses as a bit of a ‘goldrush’ moment. However, a lot of research says that the sector is set for growth.
In other news, HSBC has nailed its intentions to the mast with a big push in 2020 for its ETF business, with new hires and new products, including eight new ESG ETFs and a planned passive platform for precious metals.
We also have an interview with Howie Li, LGIM’s head of ETFs, on their recent launch of an ESG ETF range and a hint that next off the block for them will be a fixed income product.
Finally, the end of December saw European ETFs go through the USD1 trillion marker in assets under management – virtually 20 years after the first listing.
