| ESG beats smart beta in trend stakes Morningstar’s report on smart beta, reviewed this week, reveals that smart beta has dropped from favour across the board, with Director of Global ETF Research, Ben Johnson describing the strategy’s returns as ‘lacklustre’ during the market downturn in the first quarter of the year. The same cannot be said for ESG, a strategy and filter easily applied through ETFs, and popular the world over at the moment. Sage Advisory’s Bob Smith has commented on his latest survey of ETF providers and their approach to ESG, attempting to sort the observant from the not very…the winner, with the highest ESG standards, was a small publicly listed ETF so size does not matter in the ETF stakes.
