TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE

Last week, Tourism Australia launched the next iteration of our Holiday Here This Year campaign, with positive feedback from both consumers and industry. It has already generated over one thousand pieces of media coverage.

We also held the Tourism Australia Board Meeting in Adelaide last Thursday, and we took this opportunity to hold our first face to face event with industry since the COVID pandemic began. It was really great to be able to see some of our industry partners, and hear from them first hand on how they are dealing with the challenges head on.

It has also been great to hear more positive news in Australia coming through, with both NSW and Victoria reporting low instances of community transmission, and further easing of restrictions. It feels like sentiment is improving, and people are feeling more confident about travelling and booking their next holiday!

Save the date Destination Australia 2021
Tourism Australia will be hosting the seventh annual Destination Australia conference on 4 March 2021 at the ICC Sydney. After the unprecedented challenges of 2020, the conference will focus on the future of Australian tourism, with high profile speakers sharing consumer insights, global trends and discussing key opportunities for the tourism industry in a post COVID world. Destination Australia will also be offered online for those unable to attend in person. Watch a recap of last year’s event here and stay tuned for more information on speakers and how to register.

Applications open – Australia Marketplace Online Japan 2021
Applications are now open for Australia Marketplace Online - Japan. The virtual event will be held from 4 to 5 February 2021 and will take place online this year in a revised format. The virtual event will provide an opportunity for participating Australian tourism operators to establish and maintain business relationships with qualified travel agencies and tour operators from Japan. Virtual Media Marketplace in Germany
Tourism Australia attended the first edition of the virtual Media Market Place organised by TravMedia in Germany. The two-day event facilitated virtual meetings with media representatives from the German market. There was significant interest in obtaining information on Australia’s World Heritage areas, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tourism experiences, wildlife and road trips. Tourism Australia’s Aussie Specialist Program (ASP) COVIDsafe was represented at the first live training event in Germany since March. Training over 200 travel agents during the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Roadshow event took place in four cities across Germany: Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Augsburg and Constance. Agents were encouraged to start planning trips as the usual planning period for Australia takes up to nine months. Furthermore, agents were inspired with presentations on wildlife and nature journeys and encouraged to become experts in selling Australia with the help of the ASP.

The first ‘Japan Host’ industry development workshop delivered by Tourism Australia and the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) for Queensland operators took place online this week. The program is designed to support tourism businesses looking to engage Japanese travellers in the future. Tourism businesses who complete the Japan Host program will be confident they can understand the cultural needs of the Japanese visitor along with COVIDSafe requirements. The online program commenced with Queensland and runs through to April 2021 visiting (virtually) each state. Find out more here

Capella Lodge named best Australian Lodge in Condé Nast
Baillie Lodges’ luxury Lord Howe Island accommodation Capella Lodge was recently voted the best resort in Australia in the Condé Nast Traveler 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards’ Australia Pacific category. The Lodge reopened earlier this month, following a seven-month hiatus due to the Coronavirus pandemic. A short two-hour flight from Australia’s east coast and home to the world’s southernmost coral reef, the tiny World Heritage-listed Lord Howe Island boasts awe-inspiring natural assets making it a ‘best-kept secret’ destination for snorkelling and diving, as well as hiking along mountain and beach tracks.

CLIA #WeAreCruise campaign launches
Australian and New Zealand businesses impacted by the suspension of cruise operations are voicing their support for a carefully planned revival in a new video series launched this month by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Part of CLIA’s #WeAreCruise initiative, the videos highlight the economic impact suffered by local businesses and the 25,000 jobs that are at risk across Australasia while the cruise industry remains at anchor. An initial four videos will be released on social media during October and November as part of a wider campaign that aims to raise awareness of the impact on the region’s $5 billion-a-year cruise industry and tell the personal stories of people within the Australasian cruise community. ATEC program supporting Australian tourism exporters to attract domestic visitors
Following the success of its series of domestically focused workshops for South Australian tourism operators, ATEC will expand its program nationally this November. The five-module program takes an in-depth look at three crucial elements of domestic distribution through a series of one hour, online Domestic Ready workshops: consumer marketing, product distribution and pitching your product. Moonlight Cinema returns for its 25th anniversary this summer
One of Australia’s longest running outdoor cinemas, Moonlight Cinema, is returning to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide this November and will celebrate 25 years of alfresco flicks. Film buffs can catch screenings under the stars in iconic inner-city green spaces. Moonlight Cinema 2020 will run from November 2020 to April 2021 and will take place in Centennial Park Sydney, Roma Street Parkland in Brisbane, Botanic Park Adelaide, Kings Park Perth and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne.

The National Gallery of Victoria announces second Triennial exhibition
Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has announced the return of its major Triennial exhibition in December 2020. The second Triennial will feature 86 projects by more than 100 artists, designers and collectives from around the world, including big names like Jeff Koons, Refik Anadol and Porky Hefer and will feature 34 brand new projects commissioned by the NGV specifically for the Triennial. The NGV Triennial exhibition is free to attend and will open to the public from 19 December 2020 until 18 April 2021.

The Australian Museum reopens in November
The Australian Museum in Sydney is set to reopen at the end of November following a $57.5 million renovation. The nation’s first museum, founded more than 190 years ago, will boast a complete new look with a significantly expanded public floor space and a major new touring exhibition hall, allowing the museum to host either one major exhibition or two exhibitions simultaneously. The upgrade will also feature new educational spaces, a new museum shop, a second café, expanded Members' Lounge, cloaking and new amenities. The museum will open next month with an impressive line-up of exhibitions including Tyrannosaurs: Meet the Family and the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition. Bookings will be available from late 2020 onwards.

Sydney Opera House reopens
Sydney Opera House is reopening its doors with a program of unmissable live events starting from 2 November 2020. The Opera House’s annual festival of action, ideas and change, Antidote, will return next month, bringing together thought-leaders from around the world to reflect on 2020. For the first time, the Opera House and award-winning Bennelong restaurant will offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy the finest food and wine, with performances by musicians from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Australian Chamber Orchestra. Guided tours will also return, refreshed and with a new purpose-built venue that allows guests to watch unforgettable moments from past Concert Hall performances, brought to life through a 270-degree digital projection.
