The EONS13 Scientific Committee Chairs, EONS President Andreas Charalambous and Board Member Wendy Oldenmenger, have led a top team in putting together a first class programme for you at this year’s virtual cancer nursing conference from 19-21 September. It features expert speakers from all over Europe, and beyond. Here they share a flavour of what is in store for you:
Introducing the line-up, Wendy said: “There are a wealth of exceptional sessions on offer at our virtual conference that will help transform your practice and further your career. You will have the opportunity to strengthen your knowledge of immunotherapy and precision oncology, including learning about the use of biomarkers and genetic risk; then there’s a joint session together with ESMO on the importance of Phase 1 clinical trials. I’d like to draw your attention to the opportunity you will have to find out more about age-specific care in oncology with our colleagues at SIOG as well: we will focus on adolescents and young adults and long-term follow-up, and on care for older patients too of course. We’ll also be sharing the findings of the EONS safety survey, a really important and revealing piece of work from our Advocacy Working Group.”

The EONS Advisory and General Meetings will take place online on the morning of Saturday 19 September before the start of the EONS13 Congress at 12.30. The General Meeting is from 9.30-11.00 CET for all EONS Members to hear about the work our organisation has been doing on your behalf over the last year and learn about our plans for the future. The Advisory Council is from 11.20-12.00 and is for Advisory Council members only. More will follow about this, so stay tuned but please put the date in your diary now!

| NEW EONS BOARD MEMBER ELECTED |

As a result of the recent voting process, Matt Fowler has been elected as an EONS Executive Board member. The EONS full membership will confirm the result and the appointment at the EONS online General Meeting on Saturday 19 September at the start of the virtual EONS13 Congress/ESMO2020. Once confirmed, the Executive Board Member will immediately take up post for the term of office until September 2021.
EONS wholeheartedly congratulates Matt and looks forward to welcoming him to future Executive Board meetings. We would also like to thank all the candidates for their engagement and for offering their experience and time to EONS. We also thank everyone who actively engaged with the work of EONS by participating in the voting process.

| “NutriCaNurse” is the latest EONS education project. Malnutrition affects more than 50% of cancer patients and is present in more than 80% of patients with advanced disease or metastasis. EONS recognises the importance of role of nutrition in cancer patient care and is developing a new webinar on the key issues. In addition, a short practical guide will be written. It will be available both in print and for download as a PDF. A NutriCaNurse Twitter Chat will take place on Thursday 8 October at 19.00-20.00 CET. The moderator is Mary Tanay (EONS, Communications WG), and the experts are: EONS, cancer nursing, Sara Torcato Parreira; ESPEN European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolims, Alessandro Laviano. VIRTUAL TOWNHALL MEETING FOR THE
EUROPE'S BEATING CANCER PLAN |

| On September 10, the European Commission and the European Health Observatory hosted a virtual townhall meeting on the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP). Representatives from the European Commission highlighted that the feedback received from the roadmap, public consultation, targeted stakeholder consultations, bilateral meetings and individual submissions by stakeholders is being taken into consideration when drafting the EBCP. EONS has been very active in these consultations and in encouraging policy makers to follow the recommendations of the European cancer community including healthcare professionals and public stakeholders. We would like to see a plan that promotes synergies with other EU initiatives and tackles health inequalities in quality cancer care. EONS welcomes the efforts that the Commission is making across all it’s Directorates to create a cohesive and well-funded Cancer Plan. We believe that the EBCP needs to recognise that post-graduate cancer nursing training programmes should be made available in all EU Member States in order to ensure that all cancer patients receive the same standards of quality care everywhere. |

DESPITE A U-TURN ON PROMISED HEALTH BUDGET,
THE EU CANCER PLAN REMAINS A TOP PRIORITY |

| The European Commission is expected to finally get to the heart of its five-year health agenda with the unveiling of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan in the last quarter of this year. The EU cancer plan remains the flagship commitment of the von der Leyen Commission when it comes to public health, although the COVID-crisis has understandably diverted attention over the past few months. The actions set out in the plan will aim to support, coordinate and even supplement member states’ efforts at every stage of cancer care, including prevention and quality of life of survivors. A 33-MEP special committee on Beating Cancer (BECA) with a 12-month mandate was established in the European Parliament in June. Its main goal is to identify legislation and measures that can help prevent and control cancer, and consider how research can be effectively supported.
Unfortunately, the EU health agenda in the forthcoming seven-year budget which was originally announced as being €9.4 billion has been undermined by the heavy cuts to the proposed EU4Health Programme. The proposal has now been reduced to €1.7 billion after pressure from the so-called ‘frugal four’ countries at July’s EU summit.

PHARMACEUTICAL STRATEGY FOR EUROPE –
EQUAL ACCESS IS KEY |

| Patients across the European Union expect to be able to benefit from equal access to safe, affordable and innovative medicines but often this is not the case. In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the European Commission is running an initiative: ‘’The Pharmaceutical strategy for Europe’’ which aims to create a regulatory framework for EU Member States and support the pharmaceutical industry in promoting research and technologies that fulfill patients’ needs at a fair price. Health inequalities in accessing quality care across Member States are still evident, with patients often unable to bear the financial cost of their treatments due to the high price of medicines negotiated between EU Member States and pharmaceutical companies. Transparency, digitalisation and medicine shortages are the burning issues that the European Commission has to tackle to address the issue of health inequalities. EONS is looking forward to the outcomes of this initiative, particularly as regards patient access to affordable cancer treatments. |

| PARLIAMENT GOES GOLD FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER |

| September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month: A time to recognise the children and adolescents affected by cancer, the families who care for them, healthcare professionals and their caregivers, the survivors, the children who lost their lives, and the scientists dedicated to beating childhood cancer. The European Parliament in Brussels has been lit up in gold to bring unprecedented visibility to the burden of childhood cancer in Europe and to signal support to young people affected by the disease and the community that serves them. This was made possible in the European Parliament at the highest level and championed by Vice-President Ewa Kopacz. The initiative is supported by SIOP Europe, CCI Europe and PanCare representing the European paediatric cancer community.
