EONS15 – OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF MAJOR CANCER PREVENTION INITIATIVE – PREVCAN |
---|
| Former EONS President Lena Sharp officially launched the PrEvCan campaign at EONS15/ESMO22. This ground-breaking drive to reduce rates of cancer across Europe is initiated and led by EONS with ESMO as key partner, alongside the European Cancer Patients Coalition (ECPC) and more than 60 other international and national organisations. The campaign is based on the European Code Against Cancer (ECAC), which sets out 12 recommendations ranging from physical activity and dietary guidelines to tobacco use and second-hand smoke. Over a year, starting from October 2022, each month will be dedicated to promoting one of these recommendations and highlighting the scientific evidence supporting it, with the dual objective of increasing awareness of how to prevent cancer among the general public and of providing healthcare professionals with a more comprehensive toolkit for communicating the importance of cancer prevention effectively. A special policy session between ESMO, EONS and ECPC on the oncology workforce in the frontline for cancer prevention across Europe highlighted cancer prevention from several different perspectives (cancer nursing, medical oncology and patients) as well as from the European union’s political agenda. Explaining why nurses are perfectly placed to lead such a campaign, Campaign Lead and former EONS President Dr Lena Sharp said: “Cancer nurses are ranked the most trusted profession and are the largest group of healthcare providers. They interact with people throughout their lifespan, are involved with people during treatment, follow-up and survivorship phases and are thus perfectly placed to educate, inform and support patients and their friends and families on cancer prevention and risk reduction strategies.” Join the campaign and get involved! The campaign has now started, with the October focus on tobacco use and second-hand smoke. We invite you to get involved and share the messages around this key issue. EONS' WORK ON AYA CANCER CARE – PRESIDENT ADDRESSES TOP CONFERENCE |
---|
| In the last two decades, the international healthcare community became more aware of the specific needs of Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) with cancer. AYAs diagnosed with cancer make up a particular group of patients whose clinical and psychosocial needs differ substantially from those of paediatric patients or older adults in cancer care. Until today, most paediatric and adult healthcare models are not optimal to provide the necessary support to meet AYA specificities, such as the unique epidemiology and the complex clinical and psychosocial challenges, such as difficulties in access to clinical trials and specialised age-appropriate cancer care. Facing these challenges, EONS’ current President, Johan de Munter, is part of the SIOPE AYA Committee to provide and receive strategic and direction-forming input into and from existing networks, as well as to liaise with professional and patient organisations to bring AYA issues onto the political agenda. Furthermore, EONS joined forces with the European Society for Paediatric Oncology (SIOPE), the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), and other several AYA leading organisations within ENTYAC (The European Network for Young Adults with Cancer). GET UP STAND UP FOR AYAs with cancer was a 2-day congress, where all the different aspects of AYAs with cancer were discussed by a panel of international healthcare- and patient experts that have significantly contributed to elucidating the unique challenges for these patient group. Johan De Munter presented during this congress reporting on the AYA-focussed perspectives of EONS. During the congress, there were opportunities for discussion, and exchanging opinions and thoughts in addition to the presentation of national and international experiences. This congress was also a great opportunity to discuss future collaborations between key leading organisations on AYA initiatives and projects to improve AYA cancer care across Europe. Find out more |

EONS TAKES THE TEMPERATURE OF CANCER NURSING ACROSS EUROPE – SURVEY |
---|
| In 2020, EONS collected data on the current status and development of cancer nursing from more than 650 nurses in 42 European countries. The analysed data were presented as the European Cancer Nursing Index 2020©, and described both the overall situation and also important differences between countries. This Index was presented at various meetings and congresses and also used to successfully advocate for better education, safety and recognition for cancer nursing in Europe – find out more here. To measure development and progress, EONS now plan an update, the European Cancer nursing Index 2022©. EONS invites cancer nurses across Europe to respond to an online survey, covering similar areas as the previous version of the Index. The survey is available in 16 languages. We hope you will join us in continuing to improve cancer care by taking the survey. Take the survey |

EONS STANDS WITH THE PEOPLE AND ONCOLOGY COMMUNITY OF UKRAINE |
---|
| The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is following developments in Ukraine with great sadness. Our mission is to ensure that all people affected by cancer benefit from equal, safe and high quality care. This brutal act of war is endangering all people in Ukraine – including the oncology workforce who, with other healthcare colleagues, are working under unbearable pressure. EONS stands firmly against all forms of violence and is hoping that this appalling situation, and its far-reaching consequences, can be defused for the sake of all innocent parties caught up in it. We encourage people to back European and International organisations in their support of the people of Ukraine. EONS will try its best to find ways to reach out to the oncology workforce and people affected by cancer and help in capacity building where possible. War only brings loss, sadness and inhumane suffering and we truly hope for a peaceful resolution. Our thoughts are with all the people of Ukraine. |

ICN BACKS WHO 10-POINT PLAN TO EXPAND HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE |
---|
| The International Council of Nurses (ICN) welcomes the publication of the World Health Organization’s latest workforce report, which reveals shortages that WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge describes as a ‘ticking time-bomb.’ The 'Health and Care Workforce in Europe: Time to Act' report highlights many of the issues ICN has raised since the start of the pandemic, including the findings in our Sustain and Retain report. Those issues include the ageing nursing workforce, the uneven distribution of nurses throughout the region, failure of governments to train enough of their own nurses rather than rely on international recruitment, and the ‘COVID-Effect,’ which has led to greater sickness absences, increased burnout and mental health problems among nurses, and higher levels of intention to leave the profession. MEN AND CANCER – RAISING THE ISSUES |
---|
| The report “Men and Cancer: Raising the Issues” is now available. This report was produced based upon the Community 365 Roundtable Meeting on Men and Cancer held earlier this year, as part of the activities of the European Cancer Organisation's Inequalities Network. The Roundtable sought to explore how the health sector, cancer policies and services may take into consideration the experience of men with cancer more effectively, in order to improve their outcomes throughout Europe. Men bear an excess burden of cancer, in terms of both incidence and mortality. In the EU-27 in 2020, there were 1.44 million cancer cases in men and 1.24 million in women. The matter was also contemplated in the context of possible opportunities for improvement presented by Europe's Beating Cancer Plan, the EU Cancer Mission and other EU and global health policy agendas and initiatives. |
