| | The burden of cancer in Europe remains high and we see new cancer diagnoses at our places of work every day. We do our best to give our patients the very best care we can, but sometimes wonder how we can change this landscape. That is why EONS has launched the PrEvCan cancer prevention campaign, which will run for a year and is now in its second month. We must increase awareness of the risks of cancer. The campaign aims to reach not only healthcare professionals and cancer nurses but the wider public too. Our first two campaign months focus on the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke. In this newsletter, you will find out more about how you can access user-friendly resources to share this message with your patients, and your wider networks, and get involved with this major cancer prevention drive. Together we can make a real difference and begin to turn those cancer statistics around. In this edition, you’ll also read about some excellent upcoming free webinars where you can grow your knowledge in the company of top cancer experts and find out about the importance of new research in cancer nursing. | |

| It’s not a secret that smoking is a significant risk factor causing cancer. Cigarettes, waterpipes and e-cigarettes all increase the cancer burden. If you are talking with patients who are smokers about cessation possibilities, they often refuse saying that it’s only their health at stake. However, that’s not necessarily true. Smoking can also affect non-smokers. Secondhand smoking, passive smoking, involuntary smoking – all these terms describe tobacco smoke pollution or environmental tobacco smoke emitted from the burning end of smoked tobacco products. It is proven that inhalation of secondhand smoke by non-smokers causes premature death and several diseases. So, smoking cessation is not only in the active smoker’s best interest. | | EONS PRESIDENT SPEAKS AT 8TH ANNUAL WORLD CANCER SERIES | |
| |
---|
| EONS President Johan de Munter took part in an important panel discussion at the high-profile 8th Annual World Cancer Series Europe, in Brussels on 9 November. Along with other top cancer experts, Johan examined how data and digital technologies can enhance care delivery. Johan explained: “Digital healthcare delivery is increasingly becoming a core component of effective delivery quality cancer care. Cancer nurses are uniquely positioned in leading and influencing equal access to digital cancer care and digital cancer care delivery. Nevertheless, there are still many challenges to overcome to advance the digitalization of healthcare in cancer care. “In the last decade, cancer nurses and healthcare professionals had to adapt to the new realities of using data and digital technologies in their daily practices; but the provision of training and education is often inadequate, and there is insufficient digital data regulation and management. In practice, we face fragmentation and data-sharing that does not synchronize with current healthcare platforms, making it difficult to use it in daily practice. Some of the barriers are widening the digital gap in the cancer population with risks of unequal access to cancer care and support! “Today, the future of digital healthcare delivery is already here. The improvement of patient safety and better clinical outcomes for cancer patients and their families is central to EONS’ work. At EONS, we firmly believe that cancer nursing is crucial to increasing digital health literacy, closing the digital gap, and safely harnessing the benefits of data and digital technologies in cancer care.” Find out more | |
| RCC4Nurses: IMPROVING QUALITY OF NURSING CARE IN METASTATIC RENAL CELL CARCINOMA |

| | EONS is a proud collaborating partner in a new project titled “RCC4Nurses: Improving quality of nursing care in metastatic renal cell carcinoma” (or “RCC4Nurses”) led by Dr Grigorios Kotronoulas, University of Glasgow, UK. It is funded by Pfizer and will run through October 03, 2022 – July 04, 2024. EONS’ role is to provide project management and communication/dissemination support. The aim of the RCC4Nurses project is to develop, deliver and evaluate an evidence-based, fit-for-practice, concise and scalable online educational programme for nurses on ‘advanced patient monitoring’ in the context of advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in Europe. The project will align development of the educational programme with current requirements in this area of practice to enable uptake by individual nurses and training institutions across Europe. The project’s goal is to fill the gap in clinical practice by making education in RCC accessible to all nurses across Europe. Find out more | |

| | EONS PRESIDENT CALLS FOR STRONG ACTION TO MAXIMISE CANCER NURSES' IMPACT | |
| |
| |
---|
| EONS President Johan de Munter delivered a presentation at the 4th Quality Care Symposium 2022 in Madrid. In it, Johan made a strong call for policy interventions and investment that help cancer nurses have maximum impact in reducing the cancer burden: “Cancer Nurses are critical in the global effort to achieve sustainable cancer care. They make a central contribution to national and global targets related to a range of health priorities in cancer care, from prevention to survivorship care, patient safety, and the delivery of integrated, people-centered care. “The current challenges in cancer nursing require policy interventions that enable them to have maximum impact and effectiveness by optimizing cancer nurses’ scope and leadership, alongside accelerated investment in education, training, research, leadership, management, and capacity-building strategies. Such investments will contribute to tackling the current challenges, eliminating the current inequalities in the global cancer nurse workforce, and strengthening opportunities to decrease the global cancer burden.” | |

| This webinar discussion – on 15 December 17-18.00 CET – will lead to a development of a new guideline statement that will then be further discussed and voted on during the ABC 7 Consensus Conference. In each webinar of this series, challenging clinical issues will be discussed, for which available data is scarce, and hence expert guidance is key. The ABC Consensus Conference started from the willingness to change the outcomes of ABC patients. | | EONS TAKES THE TEMPERATURE OF CANCER NURSING ACROSS EUROPE – SURVEY | |
| |
---|
| In 2020, EONS collected data on the current status and development of cancer nursing from more than 650 nurses in 42 European countries. The analysed data were presented as the European Cancer Nursing Index 2020©, and described both the overall situation and also important differences between countries. This Index was presented at various meetings and congresses and also used to successfully advocate for better education, safety and recognition for cancer nursing in Europe – find out more here. To measure development and progress, EONS now plan an update, the European Cancer nursing Index 2022©. EONS invites cancer nurses across Europe to respond to an online survey, covering similar areas as the previous version of the Index. The survey is available in 16 languages. We hope you will join us in continuing to improve cancer care by taking the survey. Take the survey | |

| |

| The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is following developments in Ukraine with great sadness. Our mission is to ensure that all people affected by cancer benefit from equal, safe and high quality care. This brutal act of war is endangering all people in Ukraine – including the oncology workforce who, with other healthcare colleagues, are working under unbearable pressure. EONS stands firmly against all forms of violence and is hoping that this appalling situation, and its far-reaching consequences, can be defused for the sake of all innocent parties caught up in it. We encourage people to back European and International organisations in their support of the people of Ukraine. EONS will try its best to find ways to reach out to the oncology workforce and people affected by cancer and help in capacity building where possible. War only brings loss, sadness and inhumane suffering and we truly hope for a peaceful resolution. Our thoughts are with all the people of Ukraine. | |
