| | | In this newsletter, we look forward to some forthcoming important events in the cancer nursing calendar – namely, next year’s EONS15 conference and European Cancer Nursing Day 2022. More details will be revealed soon, but you can already find out what the themes will be for these important landmarks in the year ahead. The newsletter also invites you to participate in our latest educational webinars in the Nightingale and the Patient and Occupational Safety series. In the EU and Policy section, there are three interesting initiatives that EONS is involved in. And, last but not least, two key opportunities are also advertised this month – for a new EONS COO and for a new member of the Communications Working Group. |

| EONS15 CANCER NURSING CONFERENCE – THEME ANNOUNCED! |

| | We are delighted to be able to announce the theme of our next EONS Conference, EONS15: ‘Quality cancer care: pathways to clinical excellence in cancer nursing’. This key fixture in the cancer nursing calendar will take place in September 2022 and more details about the specific date and the location will be available soon. The recently formed EONS15 Scientific Committee , who undertake the planning of this important event, have also decided the EONS15 abstract categories:
1. Health promotion, prevention and screening
2. eHealth and digital innovations
3. Supportive care and symptom management
4. Patient and occupational safety
5. Palliative and end-of-life care
6. Professional and educational issues in cancer nursing
So, stay tuned for the hottest cancer nursing event of 2022! More information will be available on the EONS website and in the newsletter in due course. |

| | The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is looking for a new Chief Operating Officer (COO). EONS asbl is a pan-European Brussels-based not-for-profit membership organisation with a current membership of almost 28,000 cancer nurses from all over Europe, the largest group of healthcare workers in the oncology workforce. EONS is also a founder and key contributor to the Cancer Nursing Fund, a charitable foundation set up under the auspices of the King Baudouin Foundation in Brussels. The COO will support European cancer nurses and the cancer nursing community in fulfilling their roles in cancer care and advancing cancer nursing across Europe through EONS’ 4 Pillars: Communication, Advocacy, Research, and Education.
The COO oversees the implementation of EONS’ strategic priorities and ensures the continued relevance to the membership of existing activities. The COO leads the Brussels-based asbl, with a staff of 6, and is responsible to an internationally assembled Board and reports directly to the President of EONS.
We are looking for a person who has a success-focused mind-set, can manage conflicting demands effectively, has a strong sense of integrity, a positive attitude, is mission-driven and self-directed, but also has people-centred leadership qualities. We expect the COO to have previous membership organisation experience, working with nurses in health care organisations and/or societies and would preferably come from a (cancer) nursing background.

You will also play an active role as an advocate on social media. Dr Racha Kussaibati, MD, from the UK, will talk about ‘An oncologist’s experience of a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment’ and the importance of good communication for cancer nurses, and a film called ‘Tom’s Story’ will also feature. CANCER PREVENTION IS THE KEY! |

| | | Next year’s European Cancer Nursing Day (ECND) will again take place on 18 May and will focus on the prevention of cancer. The EONS Cancer Prevention Plan (ECPP) has the aim of raising awareness, building capacity, promoting health and addressing health literacy. The campaign will run for a year, launching in May 2022, and will tie in with the European Code Against Cancer and its 12 recommended actions to reduce risk. Stay tuned for more information across all EONS platforms. We look forward to a powerful event that everyone can participate in to help address the burden of cancer in Europe. |

| | In the latest YCN blog, Michaela Popelkova looks at the historical and changing professional relationship between nurses and doctors in the healthcare team. She says: “For a long time, we used to operate in a pyramid paternal model where the physician, as a director, decides what is best for the patient without any contribution from nurses or patients. Nurses were only the hands of physicians…” Michaela examines how this has changed over time, to a point where nurses have now grown into specialists in the cancer field. She argues that this journey is far from over however and there is further to go.

| E-ESO PATHWAYS – FREE ONLINE LEARNING |

| | | e-ESO and EONS have released a series of free online learning pathways that align with the EONS Cancer Nursing Education Framework modules. There are 7 educational tracks that you can attend at your own pace (on-demand material). Some of the sessions are scheduled in the near future and live attendance will give the audience the possibility to interact with the experts and get direct answers to burning questions. ‘Pathways’ are e-ESO’s easy and ready-to-use series of e-Sessions, covering various important areas of oncology. With Pathways, e-Sessions are specially selected and arranged to guide your study through different topics. Each Pathway is made up of a series of concise but mandatory e-Sessions (minimum 6, maximum 10 per Pathway). As a registered student, e-ESO provides regular updates about your Pathways status. | | In many parts of Europe, we are unfortunately experiencing a resurgence of the Covid-19 pandemic, making life very difficult again for cancer nurses and their patients as the strain on hospitals and other health care settings increases. In this video, four cancer nurses describe how the Covid-19 pandemic affected their workplaces, the care of their patients and themselves personally. In a series of moving accounts, we hear about the on-going deep effects of the pandemic: the scars it has left and the lessons learned so far.

| INTEGRATED NUTRITION CANCER CARE – TOWARDS A JOINT STATEMENT |

| | | Network leaders have been presented with the first draft of the joint statement for the Thematic Network, “Integrated Nutrition Cancer Care” led by The European Nutrition for Health Alliance (ENHA), at the first meeting of the 2021 Thematic Networks. The EU Health Policy Platform hosts three annual thematic networks led and run by health stakeholder organisations, of which EONS is one. During the annual cycle, leaders prepare Joint Statements on prioritised health topics, and with other Platform members wishing to participate in the process and through several live webinars (to be announced soon), they finally present them at the EU Health Policy Platform annual meeting, in spring. EONS PRESENCE IN THE
EUROPEAN HEALTH PARLIAMENT |

| | The European Health Parliament (EHP) is a movement connecting young healthcare professionals and challenges them to develop innovative and actionable solutions for European health policy. Participants work together for six months to develop policy recommendations that address today’s most pressing European health issues, which are picked in cooperation with the European Commission. The Wellbeing of Healthcare Workers committee will be working to tackle some of the most urgent topics to be addressed for healthcare professionals: adapting to increasing demands, new technologies, mental health and burnout. EONS will be present to highlight the cancer nursing perspective in these recommendations which will be published around Summer 2022.

| CALL TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM THE MARKETING OF NUTRITIONALLY POOR FOOD |

| | Nutrition is a critical factor for the health and development of children as a balanced diet can build a stronger immune system, lower the risk of non-communicable diseases (such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease), and increase life expectancy. Despite this, the food industry has been for years marketing nutritionally poor food targeted at children, placing profit above health. EONS together with EPHA and other organisations has endorsed an open letter which calls for the adoption of a legislation by the European Union to regulate the cross-border marketing of food and minimise the exposure of children to nutritionally poor food marketing by ending the marketing of it on broadcast media (from 6-9pm) and on digital media, ending sponsorship by food brands at big events and ending marketing techniques appealing to children (food labelling and influencers’ paid promotions of poor food).

| EONS SUPPORTS THE WHOLE GRAIN INITIATIVE |

| | The Covid-19 Pandemic has brought many things, including a reminder of how important resilient, sustainable, productive and healthy food systems are in our lives. For policy makers, it is a fundamental task to continue to invest in policies to tackle the “triple challenge” of simultaneously providing food security and nutrition to a growing global population, ensuring the livelihoods of millions of people working along the food chain ‘from farm to fork’ and ensuring environmental sustainability of the sector in the medium and long term. Despite consistent evidence that regular consumption of whole grains (around three servings per day) is associated with a lower risk of developing NCDs (such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers), consumption of whole grains remains alarmingly low in Europe as elsewhere. EONS supports the Whole Grain Initiative and calls on the European Commission to include whole grain in the harmonised mandatory Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling (FOPNL) system to be proposed as part of the Farm to Fork Strategy, as an important policy tool for promoting healthy diets and preventing obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

| | Dr Pamela Cipriano, an internationally recognised nursing leader, has been elected as the 29th President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN). Former ICN First Vice President (2017-2021), Dr Cipriano also serves as Dean of the University of Virginia School of Nursing and was President of the American Nurses Association from 2014-2018. Dr Cipriano is well known, both in her own country, the United States of America, and internationally, as a strong advocate for the nursing profession.
