EONS PRESIDENT JOHAN DE MUNTER AT ECO 2021 |
---|
| Johan de Munter made a key speech at the European Cancer Summit 2021 last month, arguing for the need to do more to train and retain cancer nurses. Johan said: ''We have increasing risks around retaining the cancer nursing workforce and having enough cancer nurse specialists in the future. Cancer nurses need access to education, support and recognition. We need to act now!'' Read Johan de Munter's address in full The EONS President also signed off The European Cancer Summit 2021 Declaration which looked to a brighter future for healthcare and cancer care across Europe. Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, the EU Mission on Cancer, the European Health Data Space, and the new EU Pharmaceutical Strategy, among other initiatives, are all part of the drive to achieve this. With implementation activity across these major policy initiatives already underway, the Declaration from the European Cancer Summit 2021 encapsulated the headlines of overall advice from the cancer community at this time. EONS SAFETY WEBINAR 4 – EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION |
---|
| On 6 December, the last of the 2021 EONS Safety Webinars focussed on effective communication. Racha Kussaibati, a medical oncologist who has been a cancer patient, told her own inspiring story. Racha reminded participants of the need to communicate effectively with patients, making them part of the treatment; and stressed how important it is not to overlook the family and carers. She said the time taken to talk to patients is highly valued – that cancer nurses need to start by saying who they are, why they are here, what they are there to do and what the patient may experience. This simple task is very important to gain trust and give patients the chance to spot possible near misses and errors and, as important, improve patients’ overall experience. Webinar attendants then watched a film narrating a clinical case with communication problems where the patient died, and where many communication problems could have been prevented. The video was followed by a panel discussion with European cancer nurse leaders on patient and occupational safety: on the importance of communication in clinical teams, of speaking up, working together for a better and safer environment for colleagues and patients, and, the importance of having a safe nurse/patient ratio. It was a chance to talk about the four EONS Safety Manifesto recommendations but especially the third and fourth: speak up and provide information to patients and carers. Cancer nurses are the professionals who can do the most to involve patients and their loved ones, encourage them to ask questions and help them understand any aspect of their treatment and care. EONS SAFETY WEBINARS – VIEW THE SERIES AND GAIN CREDITS |
---|
| The four webinars were based on the EONS Safety Manifesto and each focused on one of its recommendations. Their aim was to raise awareness on: Webinar 1 Handling cancer drugs during pregnancy and breast feeding Webinar 2 Personal Protection Equipment Webinar 3 Safety Culture Webinar 4 Effective communication, key to safe cancer care The safety webinar series is now concluded but all of them can be viewed online. Cancer patients are particularly vulnerable to harmful events, 3 in 10 cancer patients experience medical errors due to their complex treatments. Cancer nurses’ actions and skills are of great importance for safety and they need formal education and training to minimise the risks for both patients, their families and themselves. Every nurse, from the novice to the most experienced, should have the courage to question their practice and talk about risks and near misses in order to reduce these. By raising awareness of the importance of safety the culture can start to change and the risk of medical errors occurring can be reduced. After watching the webinars, nurses can take an online test to request a certificate and ask their university for recommended credits. (The test is available in six European languages.) PROTECTION OF WORKERS FROM THE RISKS RELATED TO EXPOSURE TO CARCINOGENS OR MUTAGENS AT WORK (CMD4 DIRECTIVE) |
---|
| It is estimated that more than 120,000 people in Europe annually get cancer because of occupational exposure to carcinogens, with cancer being the leading cause of work-related deaths. Nurse-led research has associated workplace exposures to hazardous drugs with both acute and chronic health. EONS Cancer Nursing Index 2020© found major risks related to both patient and occupational safety. Among the most serious risks reported by cancer nurses across Europe were lack of training and guidelines for handling cytotoxic drugs and even worse, nurses in many countries reporting exposure to these drugs during pregnancy and breast feeding. Furthermore, nurses report risks of negative consequences if asking for alternative duties during pregnancy/breast feeding. As it is not always possible to research the impacts of cytotoxic materials on healthcare worker health and reproductive functions, EONS, with the support of the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), calls upon European Institutions to utilise the Precautionary Principle by including hazardous medical products and reprotoxic substances in Annex 1 of the CMD4 Directive. BECA ADOPTS REPORT CALLING FOR STRONGER ACTION AGAINST CANCER |
---|
| On 9 December 2021, the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Beating Cancer (BECA) adopted the “Strengthening Europe in the fight against cancer - towards a comprehensive and coordinated strategy’’ report to strengthen the EU’s role in the fight against cancer and to move towards a European Health Union. The recommendations focus on facilitating access to cross-border healthcare and clinical trials for cancer patients, extending the use of joint procurement procedures, managing shortages of cancer medicines, guaranteeing the “Right to be Forgotten” as well as ensuring equal access to innovative cancer drugs and treatments. EONS welcomes the report which aims to act on all the determinants, in all policies, to lead to a reduction in behavioural, professional, social or economic risks with a focus on prevention and investing more in healthcare professionals’ skills. The Parliament’s plenary is expected to adopt the report in early 2022 and this plan will be primarily financed by four billion euros from the EU4Health programme. Read the full press release. |
