Friend, We celebrated a major victory when Twitter removed Donald Trump from the platform in 2021. For years, Trump violated Twitter’s terms of service by spreading disinformation and promoting violence — including inciting and cheering the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. When Elon Musk set out to buy Twitter, we knew we were in danger of losing that victory. Musk proved us right by calling Twitter’s decision to permanently ban the former president from the platform “morally wrong and flat-out stupid.” If he goes through with this purchase, Musk is planning to reinstate Trump — and the white supremacist propaganda and violence that he spews. Content moderation decisions shouldn’t be left up to the whims of a malevolent billionaire. We need to act now to #FixTheFeed and keep Trump off Twitter. Will you add your name to our petition to the CEO and Board of Directors at Twitter urging them to keep Trump off the platform. Musk is now wavering about whether or not he will go through with buying Twitter. Let us be clear: We hope he doesn’t. But the threat of Musk inviting Trump back to Twitter is just one symptom of a much larger problem: Social media platforms are not prepared to safeguard our democracy and keep us safe from hate speech and violence. At Free Press, we’ve teamed up with dozens of other organizations demanding that these companies #FixTheFeed and implement changes to their algorithms to stop the reckless spread of disinformation and hate speech. The violence and harm from bullies like Trump having an unfettered platform always falls hardest on Black people and other communities of color. Protecting our freedom of speech means protecting it for everyone. Everyone deserves to feel safe and heard in public discourse, and that means implementing common sense rules and regulations that would minimize violence and hate speech. Take the first step today by signing our petition calling on Twitter to keep Trump off the platform. Regardless of who ultimately owns and operates Twitter, we can’t afford to lose the gains we’ve made and go backwards. Too much is at stake: the safety of our communities and our democracy.
