She was chosen as an artist in the "5 to Watch" section of Fine Art Connoisseur August/September 2023 issue and was featured as the "Spotlight Artist" in the California Art Club's July Newsletter. Her work has been shown in Salmagundi Exhibitions and the past six California Art Club Gold Medal exhibitions and she has won awards in Excellence of Traditional Fine Art Exhibition, California Art Club, Huse/Skelly Gallery, Frank Bette Paint Out, Mendocino Open Paint Out, and Capitola Plein Air Paint Out. Her paintings have been included in shows at the Peninsula Museum of Art, Burlingame, CA, the Triton Museum, Santa Clara, CA, Salmagundi Club, New York City, NY, and the Mendocino Art Center, CA, as well as numerous group and solo shows. A featured artist and presenter for the Mendocino Paint Out, Howard has also taught workshops in Northern California and is an active member of the California Art Club, currently serving as a Vice President. Passion As an avid explorer and traveler, I'm curious about the transitory elements of nature and love discovering quiet unexplored areas. Seeing the light move across the land, cascading off a mountain range, streaming through the leaves, dancing on the top of the waves, and creating a beautiful ray of warmth in the sky and clouds is pure serenity; where I find my center and solutions through art, for life. Second Mountain After a successful career in finance, I returned to my passion for art, but as a curator for the Peninsula Museum of Art. It was here that I realized my ability to strengthen communities through creative endeavors. A little over a decade ago, I finally came full circle and began my journey creating fine art first by studying with Jim Smyth, Will Maller, Bill Davidson and Jim McVicker, before trusting my own vision and inner strength. Process I've always been drawn to paint water; both in the marshlands and by the ocean. This fascination comes from my fondest memories of summers at the Jersey Shore. The freedom of being on my own, floating on the waves or body surfing gave me respite from life's challenges when I was young. The beach became my solitude and place to recharge. To this day, I gravitate toward the tranquility and peacefulness of the ocean. Ideas also come to me on solitary hikes when I have the space to slow down, observe and see things more clearly. The beauty of the light and shadow patterns across the landscape, the moodiness of the sky or how the sun peeks through the dark branches of trees are what capture my attention most readily. I favor the irregularity of nature: ragged rocks, knotty tree trunks, peeling bark, and muddy waters of the marshlands. Once back in my studio, I work from my field studies, playing with dimensions and composition to establish a stronger dramatic expression. In my process, I often reflect on and find inspiration in the early California artists. My paintings generally start slowly, emerging through layers of color, which I refine over the coming weeks. Influences My grandfather was a purser for the airlines in the 1930's; his stories of his exotic travel and the delicious treats and dresses and art books he brought back filled my dreams and inspired lifelong curiosity and desire for travel. But my grandfather was at heart an illustrator. He'd been offered a job for Walt Disney but chose the airlines. He kept a travel journey and would draw people on the pages, and he created some of the first ads for Eastern and TWA airlines. My grandfather also designed the George Washington and Ben Franklin Hummel figurines for Franz Goebel, Hummel's owner. My grandfather was my aspiration to be an artist. Service to Others Through my artwork, teaching, curating, and serving as Vice president and co-chair for the California Art Club, I have found a wonderful balance of creative pursuits which enables me to feel fulfilled as an artist and person.
