Biography
Thank you so much for visiting my virtual gallery! I'm Elena, a visual artist based in West Vancouver, specializing in oil painting. My work spans a variety of techniques, from classical realism to contemporary impressionism. I love exploring different methods like fine glazing, dynamic brushstrokes, and palette knife techniques, choosing the one that best fits the subject, context, and the mood I want to capture. As I like to say, "It is all within my power to employ the resources at hand and depict it in a way that resonates with my perspective."
I've always been dedicated to honing my craft, creating paintings that reflect the everyday moments and transformations I observe-whether it's the beauty of nature or the expressions of human faces. For me, it's about capturing that first impression, the unique connection I feel to a scene, an object, or a person.
As you browse through my website, you'll find works painted en plein air-outdoors around Vancouver, West Vancouver, and the Sea to Sky Corridor-or created indoors, where I carefully observe the light and shapes of my subjects. Some of my larger works were completed in the studio, using references gathered from plein air outings and everyday walks. You'll spot local landmarks like Stanley Park, Dundarave Beach, the towering mountains of Howe Sound, and the iconic rock formations of Whytecliff Park. My still life compositions often feature subjects like fruits, teacups, and flower bouquets, all painted from life.
I also have a passion for painting flowers, so I grow a small garden and use them in my bouquets, which I paint directly from life. These flowers bring me joy, especially during the darker, rainy winter months-they truly inspire my love for color.
Over the years, I've had the privilege of exhibiting my work in local galleries and public spaces around the city. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my art with others, and I hope it resonates with you as much as it does with me.
I am also available for private commissions, where I bring my skill and attention to detail to capture the essence of both human and animal subjects in portrait paintings. One example of my work is the portrait "Robert & Betty," which beautifully showcases my ability to convey the unique spirit of my subjects.
Whether you're looking for a timeless representation of a loved one or a cherished pet, I have the talent to bring their individuality and soul to life on canvas. I carefully craft each portrait with a deep sense of connection, ensuring that the finished piece reflects the character and emotions of the subject. Over the course of a decade, I devoted myself to intensive training under the guidance of respected mentors from both Canada and the U.S. I further refined my skills through studies at the Angels Academy of Arts in Florence and the Repin Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, where I worked with live models and explored the techniques of the Old Masters.
At the same time, I focused on developing my own creative concepts and artistic voice. Through this process, I cultivated a distinct perspective and style that is uniquely my own. The blend of traditional training and personal exploration has been essential in shaping my artistic journey and continues to influence the work I create today.
I'm currently sharing my knowledge and passion for oil painting by teaching classes at both Squamish Arts and North Van Arts.
I love guiding aspiring artists and helping them discover their own creative potential, offering a supportive and inspiring environment for all skill levels.
