New approach on hazard assessment for nanoforms

A new publication by ECHA, RIVM and the JRC illustrates how to use data for different nanoforms within the same substance registration. The approach will form a cornerstone in the future guidance development on hazard assessment for nanoforms.

Further advice on how to use QSARs for REACH registration

ECHA has updated its practical guide on how to use and report (Q)SARs. The updated guide includes, for example, examples on how to check the reliability of QSAR predictions from some of the most commonly used QSAR software; instructions on how to check that the conditions for adapting standard testing are met; and a list of QSAR software that can be used to generate information related to REACH endpoints.

Forum starts to liaise with the Biocides Enforcement Group

The Forum for Exchange of Information on Enforcement (Forum) had its Forum 23 meeting on 16-18 March back-to-back with the Biocides Enforcement Group. Plans were laid for the pilot project on CLP focusing on internet sales.

Reports on the Materials' Information Platform published

ECHA has published three documents regarding the feasibility of an IT system that would provide information on the Candidate List substances in materials. The “Materials’ Information Platform” could help companies to identify whether the materials their articles are made of contain substances of very high concern. This could support companies to ensure the safe use of substances in their articles and comply with REACH obligations. As ECHA does not hold the necessary information needed for the platform and stakeholders were not ready to provide such information, ECHA concluded that the conditions for the practical implementation of the platform are, at the moment, not met. However, ECHA remains open to collaborate if stakeholders express an interest. We also welcome any suggestions to support better communication in the supply chains and safer use of substances in articles.

How to identify which risk management measures to communicate for mixtures

Formulators need to communicate safe use information for mixtures under REACH. One approach is to use sector specific information developed by downstream industry organisations. Another approach, particularly when the first option is not available, is to identify the lead components and derive safe use information for mixtures using the exposure scenarios. A Cefic/VCI task force has published a practical guide on lead component identification (LCID) methodology they have developed for this purpose. This is a cross-stakeholder project under the CSR/ES Roadmap. A free workshop will take place on 4 May 2016 in Brussels to support the publication. Registration will close by 21 April or when the seating capacity is reached (100 participants).

Stakeholders' Day speakers announced

Our free event on 24 and 25 May focuses on the REACH 2018 registration deadline. Several guest speakers will share their experience: Janet Greenwood, secretary of the “Chemical Regulations Self Help Group” will present getting organised for REACH 2018 in a small company. Ms Karin Jenken from TNO Triskelion will share best practice on how to assess hazard and risk for lower tonnages. Mr Erwin Roggen from 3Rs Management and Consulting ApS will explain the use of alternative methods for registration. Ms Erika Kunz from Clariant Produkte GmbH will present the importance of use maps and industry’s commitment to implement them for 2018 registration. Book your seat by 9 May!
