Lawmakers ask for probe after noose allegedly left in Washington Academy teacher’s classroom

  • The incident occurred in March, prior to the East Machias campus being shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Judson McBrine, Washington Academy’s head of school. McBrine said Wednesday that he only learned about the incident in mid-August.
  • The legal organization that represents the Calvary Baptist Church in Sanford said Pastor Todd Bell and his family have received death threatsBell officiated a wedding in the Millinocket area that is now linked to 158 cases of COVID-19. The pastor drew media attention for criticizing the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s safety guidelines in church services after an outbreak was detected among his congregation.
MPA to give go-ahead to some fall sports but move football and volleyball to spring

  • The Maine Principals’ Association is expected to announce on Thursday that, with the approval of the appropriate state agencies and state superintendents, it is giving individual school districts the go-ahead to field interscholastic sports teams in soccer, field hockey, cross country and golf.

    The MPA has not released its plans, but several school sources said Wednesday they expect football and volleyball to be moved to the spring.
Proposal to bridge revenue gap relies on select spending freezes, federal aid and liquor money
  • Maine’s budget commissioner is recommending $256 million in cost-savings measures as part of a plan to close a massive coronavirus-induced budget gap that will use federal funds and money from higher-than-expected liquor sales to prevent deeper cuts. This proposal appears to avoid having to cut existing funds from the current budget and layoffs for now.
Orrington church fights Maine’s coronavirus restrictions in federal appeals court

  • Calvary Chapel sued Gov. Janet Mills in early May arguing that the state’s order limiting gathering sizes to 10 people violated the freedom of religion and assembly clauses of the First Amendment and other laws designed to protect houses of worship.

Feds roll out subsidy program for lobstermen harmed by Trump’s trade war
  • The federal government unveiled a long-awaited program on Wednesday to provide aid to fishermen and lobstermen hurt by Chinese tariffs, but industry leaders expressed concern that supply chain businesses do not qualify for the aid.

Before taking the field, a Maine team rallied for Black Lives Matter 

  • Before football players at University of New England would take the field for a game Wednesday they joined forces there for a Black Lives Matter rally. About 500 protesters clad in black marched in a long single-line. The team said they were inspired to take action for racial justice after NBA players refused to play following the police shooting of an unarmed Black man in Kenosha, Wisconsin earlier this summer.
