East Baton Rouge board approves proposal to extend school day

BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer

Starting Monday and lasting through the fall semester, the school day for East Baton Rouge middle and high schools will be extended by seven minutes to make up class time lost due to the ongoing transportation crisis.

Among other changes, students would start the day at 7:05 a.m. and end at 2:27 p.m. Bus pickup times would start on average 15 minutes earlier than they do now.

The schedule changes are sparked by the loss of 22 hours of school since the school year began Aug. 9.

The question of what is and isn't acceptable outdoor cooking at football tailgates this weekend seems to have settled on grills and smokers being OK, as long as cooks and grillmasters take special precautions because of the state's ongoing burn ban.

What won't be allowed: Fires on the ground, including cochon de lait.

Southern University's Human Jukebox is widely recognized as one of the best college bands in the country.
