Dear Supporter, Welcome to the October 2021, Early Diagnosis newsletter. It seems unbelievable that were already three quarters of the way through the year. After a quiet, but still very busy summer were working hard to keep cancer high on national agendas. There have been timely opportunities to not only highlight the impact of Covid on cancer services and what it may mean for cancer outcomes, but to look forward and share, with hope and optimism, what the future could look like with action, research, innovation, investment and collaboration. We know that many of you continue to be affected by the pandemic; perhaps dealing with high levels of patient need, or working hard to get research portfolios back up and running. Thank you for everything you continue to do to improve the outcomes and experiences of people affected by cancer. Stay safe and thank you for reading. Best wishes, Dr Jodie Moffat and the Strategic Evidence team (formerly Early Diagnosis) Cancer Research UK |

CRUK Health Professional Urological Campaign Urgent referrals for suspected urological cancers have been one of the slowest to recover during the COVID-19 pandemic and fewer people have been starting treatment for urological cancers. We continue to monitor the activity and you can find the most recent statistics on the CRUK COVID-19 stats page here. If you are a healthcare professional, visit our Health Professional Cancer & COVID-19 Hub which highlights the latest evidence and key actions to take to support the recognition and referral of suspected urological cancers. On this page you will find a video by Dr Joe Mays, one of our CRUK GPs, discussing some of the key challenges and actions to consider when managing patients with suspected urological cancer in primary care. Theres also a recently updated Urological Cancers module hosted on Doctors.net (login required) that you might find helpful. In addition to the health professional-facing activity, NHS England and Public Health England are also running a Help us Help You campaign until the end of October, highlighting blood in pee as a sign of cancer along with other abdominal symptoms. For more information and resources for the NHSE Help us Help You Campaign click here. |

Refreshed CRUK Improving Early Diagnosis of Cancer 'Waterfall' Infographic, 2021 Earlier this year we undertook a refresh of the CRUK Waterfall infographic. While there were not any new data on which to update the estimates of contribution to stage shift, we consolidated a couple of the rows and added in additional key messages which were sometimes getting lost. What the Waterfall infographic highlights is, that there is no one thing thatll address late-stage burden achieving early diagnosis is a complex problem that needs to be tackled on a range of fronts at all levels of the system.
We continue to keep the Waterfall infographic under review and will update it as further data and evidence become available.
To find out more, have a look at our dedicated CRUK ED homepage and also have a read of our blog "How can we diagnose more cancers earlier?" clicking on the link below. |

Cancer Awareness Measures (CAM) Survey CRUK launched its latest Cancer Awareness Measure (CAM) survey in September 2021. This research aims to understand the UK public's attitudes, awareness and behaviours in relation to cancer prevention, screening and early diagnosis. Following on from two other waves of the survey conducted since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, this research is a rich opportunity to understand how these measures are recovering as well as strengthen our understanding of geographical, socioeconomic and demographic variation. The insights will be used to inform interventions to encourage timely symptom presentation, screening engagement and cancer-related health behaviours amongst other things. CRUK disseminates reports and journal publications but get in touch if youre interested to find out more in the meantime at [email protected] |
