Black History Month
Last Friday, we celebrated the beginning of Black History Month. Throughout the entire month, may we remember, pray for and thank those who sacrificed and came before us, and look to ourselves to continue their dreams of a brighter future for the next generation to come. I am looking forward to celebrating as I co-host the 2019 HBCU Fly-In in Washington, DC tomorrow. Check back in next week to hear more about the event!
Anti-Semitism Awareness Act
Earlier last month on Holocaust Memorial Day, we honored the lives lost and the sacrifices made to liberate Europe from evil, racism, and hate. I wanted to make sure we do our due diligence in ensuring that we continue to push back on anti-Semitic harassment. Therefore, last week, I was happy to offer my Anti-Semitism Awareness Act submitted as an amendment to S.1, the Strengthening America’s Security in the Middle East Act
According to the Anti-Defamation League, in 2018 there were 204 reported incidents of anti-Semitic related events nearly doubled that of 108 in 2016. The surge in these acts can be attributed to the nationwide rise of anti-Semitic rhetoric and related occurrences. You can read my full release on the amendment here.
Senate Finance Committee Subcommittee Membership
Last week, I was excited to announce that I will be Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee's Subcommittee on Energy, Natural Resources and Infrastructure, as well as a member of the Subcommittee on International Trade, Customs and Global Competitiveness, the Subcommittee on Healthcare and the Subcommittee on Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Growth for the 116th Congress. Statement on Gov. Ralph Northam
In regards to the controversy surrounding Virginia’s Governor Northam over the past few days, I have the following to say: While a quick apology is good, it does not excuse the choices made by Gov. Northam as an adult enrolled in medical school. The people of Virginia will make their voices heard, and I hope they will shout far and wide that there are consequences for such showcases of prejudice and hate.
