If there's one thing I want to remember about 2019, it is this one song.
Lil Nas X released 'Old Town Road' a year ago last week. Who could have known 113 seconds of hip hop with a country twang could be so profound?
While it was as catchy and silly as any disposable pop song has any right to be, its impact on music and culture in 2019 has been immense.
It connected the country and hip hop communities, even when people tried to stop it.
It gave the young LGBTQI community a new role model and inspiration. Someone powerful and popular was in their corner.
It brought joy to kids, who could not care less about any of the above. They just love the song.
And it gave us one of the greatest music videos of the year.
If you spend time with young family members this holidays, I recommend 'Old Town Road' stays at the top of your summer playlist. Share some joy where you can.
Pop music doesn't really fix the world's problems, but it makes navigating them more fun. |
