Good morning Valued Subscriber,
Anthony Albanese says he feels for his vanquished opponent Peter Dutton, but there are at least 41,000 people in Canberra today happy his dream of living in Kirribilli and working in the capital didn't come true. Dana Daniel and Eleanor Campbell report on Mr Dutton's remarkable "reverse Midas touch" that meant that of the dozens of electorates he visited in his final week of campaigning, not one was won by a Coalition candidate. It was a disaster for the Coalition, and a triumph nationally for Labor. And here in this safest of safe Labor enclaves, something big and unexpected happened too . Independent Jessie Price is on the cusp of ousting Labor's David Smith in Bean. The Pocock effect (he is now the most popular senator in Canberra) appears to have helped Ms Price do the previously unthinkable, and now Labor will be very wary of the territory's new taste for independents.
There's plenty more than just politics to read this morning, though.
There was drama galore in the Raiders' thrilling golden-point win over the Storm, and Melanie Dinjaski reports on what may be the end of Canberra basketballer Patty Mills' storied NBA career. After some morning fog and a low of 2 degrees, today is forecast for sunshine and a top of 21. John-Paul Moloney, managing editor |
