| Walmart captured nearly 36% of all U.S. online grocery sales in the second quarter of 2023. We asked: As a grocer, are you concerned about Walmart's share of online grocery sales? You answered: Obviously, yes (54%) No, we have loyalty local (41%) Other, tell us in the comments (5%) You said: Joe Watson, CPP, Retail, Foodservice and Wholesale SME This makes me think back to when Walmart launched the supercenter stores (late 80s) and how frantic retailers were as Walmart entered markets where they competed with retailers especially independents. I was one of those. A lesson that was learned very quickly...don’t try to beat Walmart at what Walmart does best, price, and to a lesser extent, convenience. An all in one shopping experience. The online trend will be another lesson for the retail grocer sector. But keep in mind Walmart shear size gives them a leg up. What would be interesting is the per store online sales and compare to other retailers who are growing this segment of their business. The field may be more level than we think. John Sickler My wife likes ordering online from “The Beast.” She says that she can just drop by on the way home from work and they’ ll have it ready. She also says that it cuts down on her impulse buying when she's in the store. The other side of it: She went in last weekend to get one thing she was needing. She got furious. She says that the prices are MUCH higher for online ordering. I feel that the more people realize this the less they will use online shopping. -- Have another thought?
