Dear John, Last week I was in California doing a Coach Leadership presentation for a client and their entire staff. A few days before the presentation I woke up early to prepare and I thought: “I really need to give a good presentation.” And then this thought popped into my head: “No, I need to BE a good presentation.” This thought stuck with me all through my preparation and the truth of it really struck home about 30 minutes into my two hour presentation on Friday. I shared the concept “we create the future we see” with the group and a 20 year old man raised his head and said: “How does this apply to me? I don’t know how to see my future. I dropped out of high school and only got this entry level job recently and even if I work hard here I don’t think this job will allow me to buy a house. And If I start to dream, how do I even achieve it?” Mic drop - all 45 people in the room were now suddenly leaning in. I was blown away with the courage and authenticity of the question. Now I had a choice. I could either brush off the question and go back to the really good presentation I had prepared to give, or I could answer his question and BE the presentation. Needless to say we spent most of the remaining time digging into his question. Dad said you “have to Be before you can Do, and you have to Do before you can Have.” Far too often we get focused on the Doing and the Having when those we are with really need us to BE. BE focused on the moment. BE focused on listening to the needs of the people in front of you. BE ready to answer the questions that come up. The presentation is secondary - you prepare for it so people will ask the life-changing questions. Choose To Win! Tom |
