Sunday can't get here soon enough -- for the Saints or their fans

Are we there yet?

Sunday can't get here soon enough. Saints fans throughout the Gulf Coast have been waiting for the team to finally come home and play a game at the Superdome before a full crowd. It's been more than 630 days since that last happened. And we're finally almost there.

Sunday's game against the New York Giants will be the official home opener for the Saints in the 2021 season. No other team in the NFL has -- maybe in football anywhere -- has waited as long to finally play a home game in front of a capacity crowd.

Unfortunately, the waiting will have to continue for a few more days. Until then, we've got you covered with all the news you'll need to know before kickoff.

So let's dive in....

“We’re going home! We’re going home!” That was the chant inside the Saints' locker room after their win against the Patriots. Beat writer Amie Just details why the Saints were so excited and what they did once they finally made it back to New Orleans.

Beat writer Luke Johnson takes an in-depth look at an area of the Saints team that's often overlooked, until it shows up big on game day like it did against the Patriots. Check out why Giants coach Joe Judge calls the Saints "a home run-type of team."

Luke Johnson also details the injury report, which includes a new name for both the Saints and the Giants.

The industrious Luke Johnson, who clearly earned his money on Thursday, checks in with one Saints star, who says he plans to take a bunker mentality into Sunday's game.

Beat writer Amie Just takes an early look at the matchup between the two teams, and you can guess which one has 'the edge; in most matchups.

And in case you missed it, our exclusive series on the Future of the Saints and Pelicans franchises debuted on Wednesday night. Here's a rundown of the stories we published in the series so far, with more to come on Thursday and Sunday:

--The Succession: Someday, the Saints will be sold. Here's the plan and what it means for New Orleans, by yours truly, Jeff Duncan and Lee Zurik.

--The Executor: A profile of the man who's been entrusted to pick the Saints' next owner, by Ramon Antonio Vargas.

--The 3Rs: An update on Tom Benson's family members and their status with the club, by Ramon Antonio Vargas.

--The Giving: A look at Tom and Gayle Benson's philanthropic efforts over the years, by Emma Discher.

--The Timeline: A look at the history of the Saints and the team's ownership, by Devin Jackson.

That should be enough to hold you over until kickoff on Sunday, but if not, check back with us on NOLA.com and in the Times-Picayune for more of the best Saints coverage in the business.

Until then, cheers!

Jeff Duncan
