I've been covering the theme parks beat for many years, but I somehow never made it to Dollywood -- until this past week. Part of the impetus to visit was the planned debut of Lightning Rod, the park's newest coaster. Unfortunately, it was delayed and was not open. That was disappointing. But the park did not disappoint.

Its other coasters, especially Wild Eagle and Mystery Mine, are great. Nestled in the foothills of Tennessee's Smoky Mountains, the locale is stunning. The food, including some great down-home Southern fare, is a notch above what most parks serve.

And Dollywood features perhaps more live shows than any other park in the U.S. I was there during its "Festival of Nations" event and saw some wonderful shows with international casts. "Mother Africa," which featured Cirque-style performances and stirring music, was especially terrific.

Partly inspired by the upbeat and genial Dolly Parton, the park has a great vibe. With something for virtually everyone, I'd highly encourage a visit to Dollywood.

Dollywood Doesn't Disappoint

Wild, Record-Breaking Coaster Launches at Dollywood in 2016

There are many reasons why I was looking forward to giving Lightning Rod a whirl. It will be the world's fastest wooden coaster as well the world's only launched wooden coaster. (The magnetic propulsion launch system on the prototype ride is what has caused the delayed opening.) Manufactured by Rocky Mountain Construction, the innovative coaster mavens who have created some incredible attractions recently, Lightning Rod is likely to receive, er, thunderous acclaim. Six Flags' Goliath Is a New Breed of Wooden Coaster

One of the reasons why I'm so high on Lightning Rod is that I rode a similar coaster, Goliath at Six Flags Great America, in its debut season last year. (Until the new Dollywood ride opens, it currently holds the title as the world's fastest wooden coaster.) Like Lightning Rod, Goliath features RMC's "Topper" track. It's a heckuva thrilling ride.

Theme Parks that Don't Cost Money. Really! (Sorta.)
No matter what theme park or amusement park you visit, you're going to have to crack open your wallet to ride a coaster or hop on a carousel. But, while most parks charge a flat, pay-one-price fee -- and often a hefty one at that -- to pass through its turnstiles and ride unlimited attractions, a handful offer free admission and a pay-as-you-go policy for its rides. For families on a budget, or visitors who are along for the ride but aren't all that keen to try the rides, free-admission parks can be great bargains. Besides (or instead of) open gates, some parks offer free parking and other free amenities. Read more about "free" parks.
