On Thursday at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Red Bull will have its chance to meet with race stewards and review Lewis Hamilton’s British GP clash with Max Verstappen. Does it really have any hope of succeeding?
To have a chance of increasing Hamilton’s penalty retrospectively, Red Bull must supply evidence that is a “significant and relevant new element” that wasn’t taken into account at the time. Helmut Marko says: “The crux of the matter is that we bring new evidence, new facts. But I can't reveal these details.”
Red Bull is seeking a drive-through penalty or a ban at this weekend’s race. Without wishing to prejudice its case, I’m struggling to see what silver bullet of evidence or “new facts” that could achieve that, as stewards already reviewed all the available video footage and telemetry – perhaps data pulled from Max’s battered car might be construed as ‘new’ as would be his own testimony, as he was in the medical centre when the stewards made their call.
Marko speaks of putting the incident in a “slightly different light” and I’m not sure that’s going to be enough to change anything. But let’s see and hopefully this will put the matter to bed once and for all! |
