| Dear Voornaam, Melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, is the fifth most common cancer in the UK, affecting 16,000 people a year. Once it spreads to other parts of the body, it becomes much harder to treat, which is why we need to understand how it spreads and how to stop it in its tracks. |
| | | Professor Bakal has been leading pioneering research into how melanoma spreads for over a decade. His team have integrated state of the art imaging technologies and AI to help unravel cancer’s complex structure. |

| In 2013, they identified a set of genes that allow melanoma cells to rapidly switch between two distinct shapes, and how they could block the function of these genes, paving the way for potential new drugs. More recently, they identified two genes, that help cancer cells sense their surroundings and ‘shapeshift’ accordingly, which could be targeted in future treatments.
