Do Pretty Corn Fields Actually Translate Into Higher Yields?

Iowa, the nation’s biggest egg producer, is on high alert as highly pathogenic avian influenza spreads in the state. All live bird exhibitions at fairs and other gatherings are cancelled for a minimum of 30 days.

High-tech planters can produce “picket fence” stands with seedlings so uniform they look like they’ve been photocopied. While pretty fields are a source of pride, do they translate into higher yields? Experts say yes but admit it’s a challenge to correlate planter performance with final yields.

Dr. Anne Budzinski was weighed down by 17 student loans when she graduated from veterinary school in 2015. Today, she has paid them all off. She says if she can do it, other young practitioners can, too.
