In the Star Wars series, the Rebels and Empire fight their wars with advanced laser weapons that blast away enemies with bright, zapping lights. For years, this kind of ammo could only be found in the realm of fiction. But now, America’s military is ready to flex its power in a major way. The U.S. Navy unveiled a first-of-its-kind laser canon — designed to shoot down enemy aircrafts, missiles and even boats that come within range. In a live demonstration, the Navy took a test boat into open waters and set the crosshairs on it. The first shot from the canon set the boat on fire. The second shot made it explode. In other words, it was a stunning success. Now, it’s up to the rest of the military to mount the canon on any plane, ship and drone they possibly can. No word yet on whether a Death Star is coming next, though.
