Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! Deterring Russia, Supporting Ukraine With new reports each day indicating that Russia will soon invade Ukraine, it’s crucial that the U.S. stand firmly with our allies in opposition to Putin’s aggression. Sadly, President Biden’s weakness on the world stage continues to embolden our enemies and shake the confidence of our allies. This week, I joined Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on a bill to provide critical support to Ukraine and impose severe costs on the Kremlin for its current aggression and its potential future invasion. Continuing to Fight Inflation This past Sunday felt like we had traveled back in time to 1982, when the Cincinnati Bengals lost the Super Bowl and inflation was at 7.5 percent. While Rams fans might be celebrating another Bengals loss, no one is welcoming the highest level of inflation in 40 years. For months, folks across our state have been telling me how inflation is affecting their daily lives. I highlighted some of their stories at a press conference this week with my Republican colleagues and called on the Biden administration to change course. The American people deserve better than reckless Democrat spending. Click to watch my remarks at the press conference The Biden Admin’s False Narrative Despite skyrocketing inflation, the Biden administration continues to claim that our economy is better off now than it was a year ago. It doesn’t take an economics degree to know just how false that is. At this week’s Senate Banking Committee hearing, I pressed President Biden’s economic advisors on how they can justify their continued commitment to a crushing tax-and-spend agenda to millions of hardworking Americans struggling to make ends meet. Click to watch my questions at the hearing Celebrating Black History From famous leaders like Frederick Douglass and Thurgood Marshall to the everyday teachers, doctors, moms and dads, Black Americas have helped shape our nation from its very beginning. Throughout the month of February, we celebrate their contributions to history and look forward to a future of even greater progress together. This week, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution I introduced along with Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) to celebrate Black History Month. Throughout the month, I am also posting salutes on my Twitter page to Black Americans who have made an impact on our state and our nation. This week’s posts featured Kimberly Clarice Aiken, a Columbia native who used her Miss America title to fight homelessness, and Charles Bolden, Jr., a Columbia native who flew four missions in space and became NASA’s first Black administrator. Stay tuned for more! Sincerely, |
