WEEK IN REVIEWINTERVIEW: EWA JUSZKIEWICZ'S FACELESS PORTRAITS IN VENICE in 'locks with leaves and swelling buds', ewa juszkiewicz reimagines female representation in art through a series of captivating faceless oil portraits. 'my work is a protest against conventional images of femininity, against idealizations, and traditional canons of female beauty,' the artist tells us. the paintings, on view at palazzo cavanis in venice, are reminiscent of 18th and 19th-century portraiture yet, instead of traditional facial features, juszkiewicz employs surreal distortions: folds of fabric, floral arrangements, or elaborate hairstyles that obscure the subjects’ faces. read our conversation in full here, and discover more recent interviews here. INSIDE THE MET'S ‘SLEEPING BEAUTIES: REAWAKENING FASHION’ designboom visits the MET costume institute's highly anticipated spring 2024 exhibition, ‘sleeping beauties: reawakening fashion.’ the dream-like show, which runs until september 2nd, brings a fantasy world to new york city through a multi-sensory approach that goes beyond the limitations of the typical fashion exhibits.
