two of the most anticipated architectural projects of 2021 have announced their opening dates, planned for later in the year, pandemic permitting. in southern france, the frank gehry-designed ‘LUMA arles’ is set to open to the public on june 26, 2021. the twisting, sculptural structure houses a creative campus with exhibition galleries, project spaces, research and archive facilities, alongside workshop and seminar rooms. meanwhile, the ‘academy museum of motion pictures’ in los angeles, designed by renzo piano and his firm RPBW, is now complete and will open its doors on september 30, 2021. the project combines the renovated and expanded 1939 may company building with a new glass and concrete sphere, complete with a terrace overlooking the hollywood hills.

in other news, motoi yamamoto has sculpted a monumental installation of about 100.000 cherry blossom petals made of salt at the setouchi city art museum. the japanese artist developed the salt petals one by one, which took him 55 hours and about nine days of work. see more here. another immersive installation currently on view is chiharu shiota's ‘I hope…’, exhibited inside the nave of a former church in berlin that now serves as könig galerie’s space. the large-scale piece is composed of millions of lines of red thread, thousands of letters sent to the artist from across the globe, and metal boat frames suspended in between.
