dear designboom reader, recent underground architecture projects go below the earth's surface to redefine the relationship between man-made constructions and the natural environment. inserted into a cliffside in greece's serifos island, the 'nCAVED house' by mold architects exists as a series of occupiable volumes subtracted from the earth. in menorca, ensamble studio has transformed an abandoned sandstone quarry into 'ca’n terra', an off-grid dwelling that occupies the subterranean landscape of the spanish island. last, 'sharaan by jean nouvel', a resort and hotel hidden within the rock dwellings of saudi arabia's AlUla desert, seeks to preserve the region’s unique landscape and its ancient heritage. thanks for reading! sofia lekka angelopoulou | senior editor |
