TODAY IN OHIO

Do Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam want to build a $1 billion stadium in the city using more taxpayer money? The Browns seemed to have trouble over the weekend deciding how to respond to the reports. We're talking about it on Today in Ohio, clevleand.com's daily half-hour podcast.

STATEHOUSE & POLITICS

Borges: Former Ohio Republican Party Chairman Matt Borges launched a website raising money for his legal defense in the FirstEnergy scandal. Seth Richardson reports Borges believes the federal case against him is politically motivated because he opposed Republican then-President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

Death row: The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Tuesday, 5-4, that two lower courts improperly authorized transit for an Ohio death row inmate to get brain scans at Ohio State University’s hospital, Laura Hancock reports. The inmate, Richard Twyford, argued the results of neurological testing could be used as evidence for reevaluating his sentence and conviction in the 1992 aggravated murder and kidnapping of Richard Franks.

METRO

Browns stadium continued: The Cleveland Browns tried to mitigate public backlash this week following news they may soon be seeking a new, $1 billion stadium, Kaitlin Durbin reports. A spokesman for the team's owners released a statement saying they're not contemplating moving or rebuilding, at this time, but left the door open for uncertainty over the future of its lakefront home.

Stimulus watch: Three Cuyahoga County councilmembers introduced proposals Tuesday to spend $13.7 million in American Rescue Plan Act dollars on parks, beautification and other projects in their home districts. Lucas Daprile lists the 20 projects, including a controversial $4 million plan to build a new clubhouse and event center at the Ridgewood Golf Course.

Skip the line: The "Ohio BMV Express" program that piloted kiosks for renewing and printing vehicle registrations and license-plate stickers is now permanent and expanding across Northeast Ohio. Sean McDonnell reports that drivers can now find the kiosks at Meijer grocery stores in Avon, Lorain, Mentor and Stow, as well as at the Medina BMV on North Court Street and at the E-Check station in Westlake.

Taxes due: Property tax bills for the second half of 2021 are in the mail for over 200,000 county residents, Kaitlin Durbin reports. The deadline to pay is July 14.

COVID-19 & HEALTHCARE

Free checkups: Walgreens Health Corners are coming to Walgreen locations in Akron, Kent, Streetsboro and Barberton this summer, Julie Washington reports. They provide free health and wellness services to eligible Ohio Medicaid members, including blood pressure and blood sugar checks, BMI assessments, test kits for colorectal cancer and information about prescription medications.

BUSINESS

Alaska Airlines: Travel writer Susan Glaser says she was impressed by Alaska Airlines’ flights from Cleveland to Seattle. Cleveland Hopkins’ newest provider typically ranks as one of the best stateside airlines thanks to generous legroom, outlets at every seat and a variety of in-flight entertainment options.

CRIME

Trevor Elkins: Former Newburgh Heights Mayor Trevor Elkins was sentenced to 30 days in jail Tuesday for using his campaign’s bank account 651 times for personal expenses, Cory Shaffer reports. Elkins previously pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted election falsification and one count of attempted theft in office.

Near maximum: A Cleveland woman charged with murder in the 2019 death of her newborn son in her Hiram College dorm was sentenced to at least 10 years in prison Tuesday. Cory Shaffer reports that 21-year-old Breyona Reddick took responsibility for her actions, saying her "feelings and fear got the best of me."

Released: A man who spent more than three decades in prison before a judge overturned his conviction last year pleaded guilty on Tuesday to his involvement in the 1989 slaying of his roommate. John Tiedjen, 58, was released from jail as part of his plea agreement, Adam Ferrise reports.
