| | Dear DPM friends and fam
Welcome to the 2024 Wrap-up edition of the DPM Newsletter.
It’s December already and the Festive Season is upon us! The DPM Team has had an incredible 2024 – so here’s a bit of an update about our work over the past few months.
We’ve been very busy with projects, Strategic Planning, grant writing and the awesome DPM Futures Program, and we can’t WAIT to share our new works with you all. |

Funded by Create NSW - DPM FUTURES is a creative, personal and professional development mentoring program, custom-designed for FOUR (NSW-based) emerging Indigenous Creatives. We are going to tell you the stories of these amazing young creatives more thoroughly in the new year, but let’s introduce them: - Keisha Mitchell, Film Maker (Birripi) from Taree
- Coby Cochrane, Film Maker (Gamileroi) from Coffs Harbour
- Lorraine Dutton, Songwriter (Barkindji) from Bourke/ Broken Hill
- Stewart Kappeen, Songwriter (Nyangbul/ Bundjalung) from Ballina
The successful applicants have been inducted and are working alongside/ being mentored and supported by the DPM Team, and our network of industry professionals until May 2025. The program draws on 22 years of DPM’s skills and experience – supporting participants to identify/set goals, learn new skills, meet new people, and further their creative, personal and professional practice. Focused on three key areas: - Creative and Professional Development
- Personal Development - Wellbeing, Identity & Purpose
- Desert Pea Media Community Project Process

Last week, the inaugural ‘DPM Futures Creative Development Camp’ was held on beautiful Bundjalung Country in Northern NSW. A 3-day intensive program – focused on personal, creative and professional development.
It was an incredible week of connection, creativity, and evolution. Bringing together the DPM Creative Team, and the incredible, inspiring, talented DPM Futures Crew, local Elders and Traditional Owners, the incredible Wiradjuri Psychotherapist Tracy Lynch and our DPM staff.
The focus was on deepening our professional and creative practice, exploring ourselves, our barriers and our wellbeing and laying the foundation for DPM's organisational culture for years to come.
We've got some incredible stories to share with you all, some outstanding Indigenous Creatives to announce to the world, and we'll be inviting ALL OF YOU to be part of this movement to turn this nightmare into a brand new dream.
Stay tuned! |

In September/October, the DPM Team were invited to beautiful Ngunnawal Country in Canberra NSW - working with a Ngunnawal-led Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO) called Yerrabi Yurwang Child and Family Aboriginal Corporation.
Over two weeks The DPM Creative Team worked with local young people, Yerrabi Staff and local community members to create some magic stories – including a music video and short film due for release on the 3rd January 2025.
We can’t wait to share the epic yarns from this special community and magic Ngunnawal country ❤️. |

2016, DPM has been working with the Bourke community to deliver songwriting and film projects. One of the outcomes of the project was a group called the 'B-Town Warriors'. In 2017, they released their hit debut single ‘People of the Red Sunset’ which dropped onto spot rotation on Triple J, attracted international media attention on its way to becoming a summer anthem of 2017 (400,000+ views on Youtube).
Throughout 2023/24 - Desert Pea Media has been delivering a new, foundation-building project model in Bourke called 'Crossroads'. Engaging previous B-Town Warriors participants in skills development, leadership, cultural education and creative development projects.
“It’s been an incredible experience being a part of the Crossroads Project. We don’t get many opportunities out here, and we feel the impacts not only on the kids and the community but our own wellbeing. Music is medicine.” – Lorraine Dutton (B-Town Warriors, Crossroads Project Participant) Special thanks to the B-Town mob, and to the Indigenous Community of Bourke for your trust and friendship over many years. |
