It’s that time of year again Marketers, Christmas. Traditionally, Christmas is a religious celebration. A time to gather with family and friends to enjoy the festive/holiday season. And a time to feast, also known as overindulging, usually due to too much temptation.
Regardless of your belief, it is time to wind up another year and look forward to the new year ahead. Something we always envision and plan to be bigger and better.
But, let us not forget the image associated with Christmas, Santa Claus.
In the 1920s, Coca-Cola decided to start using Santa Claus to market their brand during the Christmas/Holiday season. Up until that point Santa had been portrayed in various forms, some not so joyful as the one we have come to know.
However, in 1931 a revolution took place where Coca-Cola commissioned an illustrator by the name of Haddon Sundblom to develop advertising images using Santa Claus. Although the tradition of wearing a red suit and cap began in the 1870s, thanks to cartoonist Thomas Nast, it would be Sundblom who would change the face of Santa Claus forever. Sundblom based his image on the concept of Santa Claus from the Clement Clarke Moore Poem, “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”.
