Raise Funds & Awareness To help Make Real Change Happen
Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in men. 7,833 Aussie men are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year, including 848 under age 50.

That’s why we’ve dedicated the final month of the year to our hair-raising campaign - Decembeard.

Launched in 2013 as a quirky way to draw attention to Australia’s second deadliest cancer and start a conversation about a topic that can sometimes be difficult to discuss.

Our passionate community of supporters have been embracing their facial hair to help create real change ever since.

A very big thank you to everyone that has already signed up; we're excited to follow along with your Decembeard journey.

Special thanks to Brendan and Phil for lending their beards to the cause, and to Lucy for volunteering her time to capture the fabulous photos.

Grow A Beard
In December 2022, I was diagnosed with Stage II bowel cancer. It was a shock, not just because of the diagnosis, but because for months leading up to it, I was told I was ‘too young’ for bowel cancer—a misconception that far too many people face. Your support this Decembeard means everything—not just to me, but to every family affected by this disease. Let’s grow awareness, raise funds, and make an impact together.” ~ Brendan.

Every beard, big or small, makes a statement.

Beards aren't just for hipsters, grandpas, men that ride motorbikes, or people that are too lazy to shave. Anyone can help make real change happen.

All you need to do is grow a beard or some chin stubble and promote your facial hair to raise awareness and funds this Decembeard.

Challenge Your Beard

Last December, just one year ago, I flew home to Canada for my dad’s funeral. At his celebration of life, we all got sick with some random stomach bug that I couldn't shake. After a bunch of scans and consults I was diagnosed with Stage 3 bowel cancer. My partner Stephanie, our boys Rufus and Max, and three-legged tail-less cat Butchie (total badass legend) would all like to keep me around as long as possible.  Helping Bowel Cancer Australia help me is good for all of us as well as everyone else in my situation.” ~ Phil.

The Bottom Line Podcast
'After my surgery I just wanted to run ... So, I decided to train for a half marathon!’

For avid runner, Brendan, looking after his mental health and body through running was a daily routine. But when he was struggling to complete his normal running regime and feeling tired and exhausted, he decided to see a GP.

After being turned away twice and told it was nothing to be concerned about, Brendan listened to his body and sought a second opinion and was diagnosed with Stage 2 bowel cancer aged 38.
