The Gift of Jazz/MJO Tribute to Toshiko Akiyoshi

Toshiko Akiyoshi is one of the premier composers of contemporary big band music. Her Japanese heritage can be heard along with her love of Bud Powell in her fresh approach that has famously challenged big bands for decades.
The Gift of Jazz is partnering with Denver’s 18-piece Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra in presenting an evening of her unique, while always swinging music.

Gavin Worland Big Band

Established in 2022, the Gavin Worland Big Band is an 18-piece jazz ensemble made up of the finest young musicians along the greater front range with an extreme love and passion for jazz, providing equitable opportunities of individual composition and solo features. Most members of the group are currently enrolled students in accredited universities in Colorado such as UNC, CU, DU, and MSU Denver, seeking to push the boundaries of the traditional jazz orchestra while contributing their own passionate and fiery musical ideas with fresh ideas.

Supported by Denver Arts & Venues’ Denver Music Advancement Fund, The Center for Critical & Cultural Theory & Dazzle present and evening with Joshua Trinidad. Joshua is a Mexican-American trumpet player, composer and producer, who takes multiple styles of music such as jazz, ambient, rock, electronic and lo-fi, as well as elements from hip hop and effortlessly reshapes them into a unique soundscape.

The band will be returning to some of the tunes from their first CD, which took them internationally, With tunes including Love you Madly, The Island, Day Dream, and You Are There. Plus many other classic love songs in GAMEjazz’s signature arrangements.

Born of the great pandemic of 2019-2022 (so far), CONNECT FOUR is Saul Rosenthal (Rocky Mountain Jewgrass), Ben Cohen (Hal Aqua and the Lost Tribe), Meghan Salton (Cleveland Philharmonic) and Kim Bird (Kimandala with Art Lande, Playground Ensemble, Jason Klobnak Quintet). Expect to hear contemporary folk and Americana accompanied by a variety of acoustic instruments including guitar, bass, cello, mandolin, piano, harmonica, flute, banjo and who knows what else.

Wind Synth Hiphop combines shredding jazz improvisation with lofi beats. Live drums and horns are integrated with trippy DJ samples to make a very unique and cutting edge style of performance.

Ike Spivak is an American multi-instrumentalist, record producer and educator based in Denver, Colorado. His 2022 release, Earth to Isaac, features original music heavily influenced by Jazz, EDM, and Hip-hop genres.

The 'Group Stories' Quintet, founded by Mark Patterson in 2008, combines organic interaction with a love of just plain swinging to reach into the beauty of songs.

The program will include songs for Ron Miles, an original member of the group, inspired by his beautiful humanity and musicality.

Mike Rodriguez, who is expressive and brilliant, has not appeared at Dazzle before. Dale Bruning, the master of sound and melodicism. and Kent McLagan and Paul Romaine's sympathetic energy, freedom, and swing, are well-loved originals in this group. led by Mark Patterson.
