| | Gift of Jazz Presents Chie Imaizumi Little Big Band feat. Randy Brecker and Greg Gisbert
Wed., September 27 & Thur., September 28 - 6:30PM & 9:00PM
Gift of Jazz proudly presents a grand reunion show with Chie Imaizumi and Randy Brecker. Praised for her unique compositions and explosive energy, Japanese composer Chie Imaizumi has been a friend of the Jazz community in Denver for a long time. She creates music at the very top level, composing for Randy Brecker and Greg Gisbert, who will be part of these shows, as well as the US Air Force Falconaires and their Concert Band, Japan Air Self Defense Force Concert Band, and the Consulate General of Japan. She has worked on music preparation for John Clayton, Quincy Jones, Diana Krall, Paul McCartney, Leon Russell, as well as Jennifer Lopez.
When Chie lived in Denver, she formed a "little big band" that recorded her first album of original pieces entitled "Unfailing Kindness". Her compositions are very personal, each telling a story of her unique journey and experiences, which she shares with the audiences. Facing many challenges as a woman in Japan trying to succeed in a "man's world," Gift of Jazz and the Denver Jazz scene helped support Chie’s roots when she moved here. Chie was one of the very first educators for Gift of Jazz’s adult education classes, and she won our hearts from the start. This two-night, four-show gig represents her first return to Denver as a Little Big Band since moving to Los Angeles.

| | Rodney Rice
Wednesday, October 4 - 7:00PM
Rodney Rice knows just how to capture the fleeting glimmers of an emotional moment in life and turn them into songs that evoke our own feelings of despair and hope, loss and love.
Rice cannily matches music with lyrics, pairing a glimpse of a world turned upside down with a jaunty New Orleans jazz swing melody or an ode to young love with a lively country shuffle.

| | Senri Oe Trio
Thursday, October 5 - 7:00PM & 9:30PM
Ever wondered what would happen if Justin Timberlake suddenly fell under the spell of Bud Powell? That’s essentially what happened fifteen years ago, when J-Pop superstar Senri Oe decided to give up his celebrity life in Japan and he moved to New York City at 47, enrolled at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and reinvented himself as a jazz pianist.
With seven jazz albums to his name since his 2012 re-debut Boys Mature Slow, Senri Oe had tried not to look back – until now. On his latest album, Class of ’88, Oe comes full circle with a piano trio album revisiting several of his classic pop hits, featuring bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Ross Pederson at once a surprising look back and a brilliant look at how far the pop star-turned-piano virtuoso has come.
Though Senri Oe has left his pop past behind (“No more dancing!” he declares with a laugh), the 62-year-old pianist has never forsaken his songs from that era. With Class of ’88 he reopened his '80s treasure box and finds himself in the unique position of recontextualizing his own pop music as if they were jazz standards.
