DAISY Planet Newsletter - May 2022
Welcome to the DAISY Planet newsletter! First a quick reminder: You are receiving this message because you have previously subscribed to receive a DAISY Consortium Newsletter. If you would like to change how you receive these messages you can find links at the bottom of this page.
Improving Access To Braille
We're working to improve braille access in languages not currently supported in the free Liblouis transcription tool, enabling accessible book production. Liblouis provides braille functionality behind the scenes in a wide variety of hardware and software assistive technology, and can also be found in the DAISY Pipeline conversion tool. If you know of a language that isn’t currently supported or would benefit from further work, we would like to hear from you. Read more about our Liblouis braille feedback work.
DAISY Annual General Meeting
Once again we're hosting our AGM on Zoom to enable anyone interested to join us. In addition to the formal business required at the meeting, we will also be sharing details of some new DAISY projects and activities. The AGM will take place on Tuesday, May 24th at 15 UTC. Register to attend the AGM.
Accessibility Training
At DAISY we are regularly approached by organizations requesting training in the production of accessible books, document conversion, and accessible ebook creation. For the last two years, like many others, we have adapted to offer training online through self-study materials and trainer coordinated sessions over video calls. Last month we were able to resume in-person training. Read about the training session and how DAISY can help with your training needs.
Welcoming New Members
We are delighted to welcome two new members to the DAISY family. Rakuten Kobo Inc. joined us as an Inclusive Publishing Partner. Based in Toronto, Canada, Kobo sells ebooks and audiobooks around the world, offering a range of ereaders and apps to consume them. Kobo has a long-held interest in accessibility and has actively supported and contributed to accessibility-related standards for many years. Wysebee Inc. another Canadian company has also joined as an Inclusive Publishing Partner. Wysebee is a relatively new venture from experts in publishing technology, offering a new accessible content hosting and reading solution. DAISY membership comes in a variety of options to cater to a range of different organization types and even individuals.
We would love to hear your suggestions and feedback to help shape what we do, and we're always keen to share your news, events and developments with the global DAISY community. Just send the details to: [email protected]
