Celebrating the Marrakesh Treaty
This special edition of DAISY Planet celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Marrakesh Treaty, the landmark copyright exception that makes the production and international transfer of accessible books easier. After many years of campaigning and negotiations the Marrakesh Treaty was adopted in June, 2013, entering into force on September 30, 2016. Since then 93 Member states have enforced the Treaty, however there remain many countries who have yet to ratify or implement the legislation required to support the Treaty. So while we are delighted to celebrate the achievements of this first 10 years, we are excited at the prospect of what the next 10 years will bring.

On July 12th WIPO hosted an event to celebrate the Marrakesh Treaty. WIPO’s Director General and key stakeholders reflected on the impact of their fastest growing treaty and how it has made a difference in the lives of people who are print disabled around the world. The WIPO website hosts a recording which is transcribed and translated.
The Marrakesh Treaty in Action
We often hear about the importance of the Marrakesh Treaty in delivering titles to people in the least developed parts of the world, but in this new article we explore the benefits to one of the largest specialist library services in the world, the U.S. National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) at the Library of Congress. We learn that the Treaty can deliver benefit through libraries of all sizes, ultimately offering library patrons access to a significantly broader pool of resources. Read more about how NLS contribute through and benefit from the Marrakesh Treaty.
