QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The Seed Vault has seen water intrusion” - An official statement about the ‘Doomsday’ vault. The one that houses VIP seeds in case of an apocalypse. But the seeds are fine. Aaaaand exhale.

MANCHESTER

The Story

Last night, an explosion went off outside an Ariana Grande concert at a stadium in Manchester, England.

The What

At least 22 people died and dozens were injured. Grande wasn’t hurt. Videos from the crowded stadium show people, including many young kids, scrambling to escape.

Who did this?

Unclear. Officials are treating this as a terrorist attack. Police say the attacker died after using “an improvised explosive device.” Now they’re trying to figure out if he acted alone.

What are people saying?

British Prime Minister Theresa May suspended her campaign for Britain’s upcoming general election in light of this “appalling” incident. Her political rival agreed to do the same. President Trump says this was done by “evil losers.”

There are still a lot of unknowns. But if confirmed as terrorism, this would be the deadliest attack in the country since the 2005 London bombings. And it comes just months after the terrorist attack on Westminster Bridge in London.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say to when “Miss Congeniality” is on…

Everyone can get on board with world peace. Yesterday, President Trump landed in Israel as part of his first overseas trip as president. For more than half a century, ‘peace in the Middle East’ has been synonymous with ‘impossible,’ but Trump says he’s gonna make it happen. Yesterday, he became the first sitting US president to visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem - the holiest Jewish prayer site. Controversial, since Jerusalem is a key part of the peace puzzle. Israel says it belongs to them. But Palestinians consider it a part of their future state under a two-state peace solution (where Israel and Palestine are two separate states on a map). Trump later met with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, and told him it’s time to get serious about restarting peace talks. If they can pull it off, some of Israel’s Arab neighbors would be more willing to work together to fend off threats from Iran. But Trump didn’t give any details about how to move forward. Today, he’s meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

What to say when your co-worker lies to your boss about last quarter’s performance...

Problem. Michael Flynn’s got a few too. Yesterday, the top Dem on the House Oversight Committee said that the former national security advisor may have lied during his security clearance renewal application last year. The Pentagon has been investigating whether Flynn - a retired three-star Army General - broke the law by failing to disclose payments he received for work with foreign gov-linked groups (including Russia) after retiring from the military. The Dem lawmaker says that, during the security clearance process, Flynn said the money came from “US companies.” Lying on a security clearance application is a crime. And that’s not the only thing he could face criminal charges for. Yesterday, Flynn said ‘I plead the 5th.’ to Senate investigators. They’ve asked him to turn over any docs he has related to his Russia dealings. Reminder: investigators are looking into the Trump team’s possible collusion with Russia during the election. They’re especially interested in Flynn, who was forced out of his job as national security advisor after misleading the White House about his contact with Russia’s US ambassador. Pleading the 5th is the Constitutional protection against self-incrimination. Now, lawmakers could hold him in contempt of Congress - and he could face criminal charges.

What to say to your friend who went to boarding school...

Heard about this? Yesterday, St. Paul’s - a prominent boarding school in New Hampshire - released the results of an independent investigation accusing more than a dozen former staff members of sexually abusing or “misconduct” with students. Last year, it came out that a former St. Paul’s teacher from the ’60s allegedly sexually abused children at a new job at a different school. St. Paul’s launched an investigation into whether anything had gone down while this teacher was on its campus. That probe soon expanded to include other former teachers too. And now, investigators are saying that multiple other staff members were sexually inappropriate with students between the ’40s and the late ’80s. St. Paul’s is just the latest private school this year to come forward about alleged sexual abuse by faculty on campus. See: Choate Rosemary Hall, Phillips Exeter Academy. St. Paul’s is also the same school where back in 2015, a former student was convicted of sexually assaulting another student. Yesterday the school said it offers “our most sincere apology” to the victims of abuse on campus. It’s unclear whether the former staff members will face charges.

What to say when your new co-worker leaves after just a few weeks…

Guess that’s not working out. Ford’s saying the same. Yesterday, the car company abruptly replaced its CEO Mark Fields. Ever since Fields took over about three years ago, Ford hasn’t been feeling so hot. Its stock price has plunged and investors don’t think Fields has been doing enough to keep Ford cruising alongside the Teslas of the world. It probably didn’t help that earlier this year, Tesla beat out Ford to become one of the most valuable US car makers on the market. Ford says the new guy - who’s been heading up the company’s self-driving car division - will help it move more quickly to get a move on when it comes to new tech. Vroom.

SKIMM SLEEP

Core body temperature: 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. At least during the day. At night, your body dips it low to prep for bed time. That body heat that you’re losing goes to your sheets, pillow, and mattress. So it’s good to have a mattress that stays cool. We like this one. We also got you a bigger-than-usual discount when you buy the mattress plus one other thing.
