Skimm’d while deciding whether to take the homeowner plunge
QUOTE OF THE DAY

YOU'VE GOT A FRENEMY IN ME

THE STORY

President Trump’s practicing his networking skills with some global leaders this week.

WHAT’S GOING ON?

Yesterday, Trump had Egyptian President Sisi over to the White House. He’s the first Egyptian prez in years to get the invite. A few years ago, Sisi pushed out the country’s first democratically-elected prez. Since then, he’s been accused of human rights abuses...like killing opponents or throwing thousands of them in jail. That’s why former President Obama initially cut off military aid to Egypt and kept the country at arm’s length. Now, Trump wants Egypt’s help fighting terrorism in the region - and Egypt hopes to get more of that military aid back in return.

WHO ELSE IS ON TRUMP’S iCAL?

Chinese President Xi Jinping. Later this week, he’ll catch up with Trump over pina coladas at Trump’s Palm Beach, FL club. And it could get awkward. For months, Trump’s been pointing the finger at China for unfair trade practices that he says hurt US jobs. Also on the agenda? North Korea, which has been feeling extra trigger happy lately with multiple ballistic missile tests that are making the neighbors nervous. And even though China is North Korea’s biggest ally, it hasn’t been able to pressure the country to keep its missile flexing under control. Trump’s expected to tell them to dial up the pressure…or the US will.

Trump won the White House in large part because of promises to shake up trade deals and focus on national security. This week, he’s meeting with two leaders he’s hoping will help him do just that. Negotiator-in-chief cap, on.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU REALIZE IT’S FREE CONE DAY...

Winning. North Carolina’s saying the same. Last night, they beat Gonzaga to win the NCAA tournament. For the sixth time. The game was close. Really close. Things were tied up in the final minutes - and UNC was feeling deja vu. They lost last year’s championship game to Villanova at the very last second. This time, the Tar Heels are back on top. Cue “One Shining Moment.”

WHAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING...

St. Petersburg. Yesterday, a bomb filled with shrapnel exploded in a metro train in Russia’s second-largest city. At least 14 people died and dozens of others were injured. Officials say it was a terrorist attack that might’ve been carried out by a suicide bomber with ties to an Islamic militant group. They later disabled another bomb at a different station. Russia’s experienced several similar attacks in recent years with suspected links to Islamic terrorism in Chechnya (semi-autonomous Russian republic near the Mideast). That includes suicide bombings in 2013 and 2010 that also took place at train or metro stations. After yesterday’s attack, authorities shut down the entire subway system while they investigate.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR CO-WORKER GETS CALLED INTO HR…

Uh oh. Yesterday, Fox News was hit with another sexual harassment lawsuit. Last year, a former anchor came forward with sexual harassment allegations against then-Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes. The network’s parent company launched an investigation. Then, dozens of other women reportedly came forward with similar claims. Ailes was shown the door, apparently with a $40 million exit package to boot. But the issues didn’t leave with him. The company’s top host Bill O’Reilly is coming under the microscope for alleged sexual harassment in recent years. And now, Julie Roginsky - a contributor on the network - is suing both Fox News and Ailes, saying that Ailes sexually harassed her. And that other network execs didn’t investigate when she complained. She also says that Fox’s company culture is still just as disrespectful toward women as it was when Ailes was still around. Fox is staying mum on the whole thing. Ailes’ team says ‘not true’ to the allegations.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO OWNS BUBBLE NECKLACES IN EVERY COLOR…

Bye, Jenna Lyons. Yesterday, J. Crew said that Lyons - it’s president and creative director - is leaving the company. After nearly three decades. Lyons is the one responsible for neon everything and those pencil skirts your co-worker wears every other day. She grew J. Crew into a household fashion name during the 2000s. But lately, J.Crew’s sales have been down down down down down. The company’s CEO said he and Lyons “agreed it was time for a change.” Lyons packs her thick-rimmed glasses at the end of the year.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR CO-WORKER WHO’S TRYING TO PSYCH HERSELF UP TO ASK FOR A RAISE…

Today’s the day. It’s Equal Pay Day. Here’s your Skimm.

SKIMM MONEY

23%: If you’ve been on that ‘rent vs. buy’ fence for a while, keep this in the back of your mind. Buying a home is 23% less expensive than renting in a lot of top US markets. Hint: might be time to stop paying the landlord and start paying yo’self. Here are some other things to consider.
