Skimm'd with a bag of Swedish fish

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Sure enough we can hear a little voice coming from the machine" - A Texas police officer, on rescuing a worker stuck inside an ATM for hours. Withdrawal symptoms.

DO-OVER

The Story

Yesterday, Senate Republicans unwrapped their plan to repeal and replace Obamacare.

Didn't they do that already?

Yes. But it wasn't very popular. Democrats were never on board. Meaning 50 of the 52 Republican Senators need to vote 'yay' for it to pass. But here's the problem: far-right Republicans think it doesn't roll back Obamacare far enough. And moderate Republicans worry about estimates that cuts to Medicaid will leave millions without insurance. So with minimal support, Senate GOP leaders said 'let's try this again.'

What's different about this new plan?

For the far-right, Senate GOP leaders said 'we'll trim some things.' The bill will now allow insurance companies to offer cheaper plans that don't cover things like maternity care, mental health care, and other benefits required under Obamacare. For the moderates, the bill keeps taxes on wealthy Americans who help currently fund Obamacare. And ups funding to fight opioid addiction.

So is this plan going to pass?

Unclear. A couple of GOP Senators are still against it, for pretty much the same reasons as before. Plus, the federal budget nerds still have to score the bill to see how much it'll cost - and how many people's healthcare could be affected.

For years, the GOP has been campaigning - and winning elections - on the promise of repealing and replacing Obamacare. But overhauling a healthcare system that currently covers tens of millions of Americans is proving very tricky.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What people are talking about...

Liu Xiaobo. Yesterday, the Nobel Peace Prize winner died at age 61, a little over two weeks after being released from prison for medical reasons. Liu was China's most famous human rights and democracy activist. In the late '80s, he was a major part of the Tiananmen Square protests against the Chinese gov. The protests led to a military crackdown and Liu helped many people escape the massacre. He was jailed for almost two years for that. Then in 2008, he wrote a pro-democracy manifesto. The Chinese gov was not happy about it and sentenced him to more than a decade in prison. While still in there, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his "non-violent struggle" for human rights in China. And was repped at the ceremony by an empty chair. China never made many diplomatic friends for the way it treated Liu. And the government has been using its censorship skills to scrub his name from the Chinese Interwebs. Meaning, Liu spent a large chunk of his life fighting for the rights of the Chinese, even though these days not many people in China know who he is. Last month, it came out that Liu had late-stage liver cancer, so the gov let him out of prison to get treatment. But China said 'no can do' to letting him get treated abroad. Meanwhile, his wife is still under house arrest. And now the international community's pushing China to let her go free.

What to say to your friend who just got on the "Westworld" train...

Good timing. Yesterday, Emmy nominations came out. And everyone has some binge-watching to do. "Westworld" got a lot of noms. Like 22. Including best drama, best actor for Anthony Hopkins, and best actress for Evan Rachel Wood. It's tied in first place for number of noms with "Saturday Night Live" aka Sean Spicer's favorite show. HBO and Netflix bagged more nominations than anyone thanks to shows like "Big Little Lies," "The Crown," and "Stranger Things" (PSA: Barb's getting the justice she deserves). Meanwhile, NBC's the only broadcast network with a best drama series nod for "This Is Us." Props Pearson fam. It all goes down in September.

What to say to your co-worker who's always in charge of fantasy football...

Heard about this? Yesterday, DraftKings and FanDuel said 'it's not working out' and called off their merger. Last year, the two major fantasy sports sites decided to get together. They said it would help them up their advertising spending. And share costs for legal battles in states where fantasy sites are illegal. But last month, the US gov said it would block this marriage. Because antitrust. So now, instead of fighting the gov, the two companies are just benching the deal. Who is making it work? CBS and BBC. Yesterday, the two news outlets said they'll share things like videos and articles to help beef up coverage across the world. Before this hook up, CBS had a similar relationship with British network Sky News, and BBC was in bed with ABC. But the two networks worked together during the US presidential election and the chemistry was off the charts. So now they're saying 'heyyyy that was fun' and making it official.

What to say to your friend who just got back from a vacay in London...

'Ello Sir...and Rumi.

What to say when you get a mean email from your boss...

This will top it.
