Find out whether the mind can be free of all second-hand information. That is, whether the mind can empty itself of the known, the past. Then you will find out for yourself what it is to be not first- or second-hand, what it is to be something entirely different. To find that out, see how the mind is second-hand first, observe it, what its habits are, its traditions, its repetitive pleasures. Observe it, look at it. You will find out by looking at it, learning about it, that the second thing, the second-hand residue of others, can be put aside completely. Then you are not first- or second-hand. Then you are a human being.
