| 07/October/20 | UK-US trade deal: Groups demand ban on chlorinated chicken – but are silent on GM National Farmers’ Union (NFU) president Minette Batters had voiced concern about the prospect of chlorinated chicken and hormone-fed beef coming into the UK following on from a UK-US trade deal. But the NFU fails to mention another risky type of product – genetically modified (including gene-edited) foods. A UK-US trade deal could result in inadequately safety tested and unlabelled GMOs flooding into UK supermarkets. But not only does the NFU not care, it is set to support such an influx. And a powerful campaign to maintain UK food and farming standards, Biteback2030, is also silent on GM even though it's fronted by chef Jamie Oliver, who has been publicly critical about GM foods. Efforts at settling the lawsuits brought in the US by tens of thousands of people who claim Monsanto’s Roundup herbicides gave them cancer continue to inch forward, but are not addressing all outstanding cases, nor are all plaintiffs offered settlements agreeing to them. In a letter to US District Judge Vince Chhabria, attorney David Diamond said that representations made by the lawyers leading settlement talks with Bayer on behalf of plaintiffs did not accurately reflect the situation for his own clients. He requested that Judge Chhabria advance several of Diamond’s cases forward for trials. Bayer has threatened to file for bankruptcy if it cannot quell the Roundup litigation.
