| 15/August/24 | American biotech lobbyist drives GMO deregulation discussions in UK, EU An American biotech lobbyist in academic clothing is driving GMO deregulation discussions in the UK and the EU. For around 25 years Jack Bobo has crisscrossed the globe working to influence governments, shape legislation and treaties, and sway audiences and media coverage on the GMO issue. Unlike Kevin Folta, his collusion with industry hasn’t made the New York Times. Unlike CS Prakash, he hasn’t featured in dirty tricks exposés. Yet his collusion with industry and behind the scenes chicanery makes Folta and Prakash’s interests and antics look like something out of kindergarten. He was named by Scientific American as one of the 100 most influential people in biotech. And that didn't just stem from his gifts of advocacy and persuasion but his powerful backers, including biotech corporations and a global superpower aggressively promoting GMOs as a key strategic asset. Now the University of Nottingham has made this GMO lobbyist Director of its Food Systems Institute and its “Future Proteins Hub”. GMWatch Consumers wary of safety of cell-cultured meat, new survey shows Most Australian consumers would not be confident in the safety of cell-cultured meat if it became available for sale in shops and supermarkets, an important recent survey has shown. Commissioned by Food Standards Australia New Zealand, the survey looked into consumer attitudes and levels of acceptance in both countries towards cell-based, or lab grown meat products. Although Australians were significantly more confident in the safety of cell-cultured meat than New Zealanders, both countries generally had low levels of confidence in these food products. Reality Check Radio They all got mysterious brain diseases. They're fighting to learn why (spoiler: glyphosate is fingered as a possible culprit) Doctors in New Brunswick, Canada have identified dozens of patients with similar, unexplained neurological symptoms — a scientific puzzle that has now become a political maelstrom. Initially, government support for a study to find out a potential environmental cause for the illnesses was strong – but then it suddenly vanished. Neurologist Dr Alier Marrero believes that New Brunswick is now the center of one of the most prolific young-onset dementia clusters in the world. Ninety percent of his patients have been found to have elevated amounts of glyphosate in their blood, in one case as high as 15,000 times the test’s lowest detectable concentration. Glyphosate is sprayed on New Brunswick's commercial forests. [GMW: Our regular readers may recall that Dr Eilish Cleary, chief medical officer of health for New Brunswick, was “put on leave” by her employer, the provincial government, while studying glyphosate. Sadly Dr Cleary died of cancer at the age of 60.] New York Times – register for free to access the article We hope you’ve found this newsletter interesting.
