| 07/September/23 | No hidden GMOs in food and agriculture! Environmental and food activists, farmers, business people, scientists, ministers, and policy makers from all across Europe are gathering today at the European Parliament for the 10th GMO FREE EUROPE Conference (GMWatch will be there). They will discuss how to respond to a proposal by the European Commission to broadly deregulate the EU's legislation on genetic engineering in food and agriculture. Despite a victorious 2022 district court ruling in CFS's original lawsuit against USDA, which found it unlawful to use inaccessible digital QR codes on food products instead of clear, accessible labelling, the court refused to vacate USDA's decision allowing this practice — denying consumers the right to know what's in their food. CFS's appeal also challenges the district court's 2022 decision allowing the USDA loophole which excludes "highly refined" products from mandatory GMO disclosures unless the GE material is "detectable".
