| 24/February/23 | As the US pressures Mexico to import GM corn, can it preserve its traditional varieties? Two years ago, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issued the first executive order that directed the government to “revoke and refrain from granting authorizations” for the use of GM corn in Mexican diets and for “release into the environment” by January 2024. While growing GM corn in Mexico has not been allowed for 25 years, millions of tons of the corn enter the country each year via imports. The order also called for a complete phaseout of the controversial herbicide glyphosate by that date. Now, however, in the face of US pressure, Mexico is weakening the ban, which was in part intended to prevent GM seed from contaminating native varieties. Civil Eats Glyphosate linked yet again to cancer Scientists in the US have found that people exposed to glyphosate herbicides have biomarkers (a naturally occurring molecule or gene found in body fluids or tissues) linked to the development of cancer and other diseases. In their study, the researchers analysed urine levels in farmers across the US and found that the high levels of the pesticide were linked with signs of a reaction in the body called oxidative stress that causes damage to DNA. Cancer initiation and progression have been linked in previous studies to oxidative stress by increasing DNA mutations or inducing DNA damage. [GMW: We've reported on this study before in our Daily Digests but as it's an important one, this is a reminder.] ZME Science Professor David Carpenter reinstated after Monsanto attempts to discredit his work The State University of New York at Albany has ended its investigation against researcher David Carpenter, determining there will be no discipline taken and he can resume teaching and researching. Carpenter — a public health physician who has spent his career researching the impacts of pollutants on the brain, particularly PCBs (or polychlorinated biphenyls) and their effect on IQ — was placed on “alternate assignment” about nine months ago by the university after three public records requests were sent to the University at Albany from a law firm that has represented Monsanto in pollution cases. The records were regarding Carpenter’s service as an expert witness against Monsanto in cases involving PCB exposure. [GMW: Thanks to everyone who signed the petition asking the university to reinstate Prof Carpenter!] EHN An unreported lab-made coronavirus in Wuhan A team of bioinformaticians, biophysicists, and medical professionals have released a preprint uncovering an unreported coronavirus infectious clone in Wuhan. For the past few years, Adrian Jones, Daoyu Zhang, Louis Nemzer, Steven Massey, Yuri Deigin, and Steven Quay have become a dream team of researchers committed to examining online databases and other sources of evidence for clues about the origins of SARS-CoV-2. They have published several leading forensic investigations of interest, most notably their forensic analysis finding evidence of potential fabrication of coronavirus genomes. In their latest preprint, the authors have uncovered shocking evidence of an unreported lab-derived coronavirus in Wuhan. The researchers looked closely at data from a 2019 study sequencing rice in Wuhan, China, and found an evidently lab-made coronavirus lurking in the background. Alex Washburne's Substack Fauci discussed gain-of-function work with Wuhan collaborator in pandemic’s earliest days, emails suggest As the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, Anthony Fauci met with an American collaborator of the Wuhan Institute of Virology about his gain-of-function research, emails obtained through freedom of information requests suggest. On February 11, 2020, Fauci met with American virologist Ralph Baric, according to a copy of his schedule. Baric, a professor in the departments of epidemiology and microbiology of the University of North Carolina, has come under scrutiny for sharing reverse genetics techniques, mice engineered to exhibit human airway cells and possibly a risky research proposal with Wuhan Institute of Virology Senior Scientist Zhengli Shi. US Right to Know Has Fauci committed perjury? Anthony Fauci said under oath he doubted he'd ever met Ralph Baric (see item above). But Fauci's schedule says otherwise. And an email details how they discussed gain-of-function work (chimeras) one-on-one in Fauci's office. Has Fauci committed perjury?
