US threatens to start trade fight with Mexico over GMO corn ban The US and Mexico are tangling over Mexico’s proposal to ban genetically modified corn, with a top US official threatening to initiate a trade dispute if the two countries can’t find an agreement. Mexico plans to ban genetically modified corn by 2024, adding another flashpoint to the two countries’ tensions over trade. More than 90% of corn grown in the US is genetically modified, according to the National Corn Growers Association. The import of GMO soybean seed has been banned since 2019. Pakistan Customs had recently confiscated the cargoes of nine ships that were illegally carrying the commodity for producing oil and poultry feed to supply to local poultry industry, he said. He argued that the Custom Intelligence had seized these consignments because GM soy was considered to be a major cause of cancer.
