He writes that it's crucial to conserve traditional seeds and that we don’t need genetically modified ones: "Farming can face adverse times like drought and floods only when you have traditional seeds. On my farm in Odisha, we have 1,200 traditional rice varieties, sourced from farmers across India, which can grow in such conditions." India Water Portal Isle of Wight: Ventnor Town Council says no to glyphosate weedkillers Ventnor Town Council on the Isle of Wight has confirmed its intention to stamp out the use of glyphosate weedkiller. The chemical weed treatment was recently reintroduced after Island Roads received hundreds of complaints last year about the weeds. The highway authority stopped the use of glyphosate last summer, opting instead for organic herbicides and manual labour to remove weeds, but after not being able to meet its contractual obligations, reverted back to the chemical weedkiller. The move to revert to glyphosate has been met with backlash — such as a petition signed by nearly 4,300 people, including wildlife television presenter Chris Packham, calling for the authority to think again. Concerns had been voiced over Ventnor’s wall lizards if the chemical was reintroduced. Now, Ventnor Town Council has agreed to immediately ban the use of glyphosate on 18 areas of non-ornamental green land it owns. Island Echo Call for ban on Isle of Wight glyphosate herbicide spraying as more dead wall lizards discovered Isle of Wight resident Steve Jones believes there is a direct link to roadsides being sprayed with glyphosate herbicides, such as Roundup, and the loss of Ventnor wall lizards. He said he found dead lizards just hours after Island Roads sprayed the area.
